EL CENTRO California October 9 Attorney John Connolly volunteered to defend Billy Cook who will be brought from federal prison to stand trial for the murder of salesman Robert H Dewey in the California Desert The state intends to seek the death penalty for the Dewey killing and Cook already faces a 300 year term for killing five members of the Mosser family in Illinois with Connolly set to arrive for arraignment and Cook held in Imperial County jail
In New York Mossadegh, visiting to press Iran's oil dispute case at the United Nations, was described as a very ill man by a hospital spokesman. He went to the hospital yesterday and no visitors will be allowed today.
Ira Stephenson former Amarillo city commissioner and head of the San Jacinto Youth Center board says money troubles drive the center's woes. Two staff resignations followed, including Les Kilgore and Ted Moss who cited mismanagement and a proposed men’s health club as overreach. Stephenson notes a $21,000 building deficit and discusses revenue ideas while promising lower salaries to new staff.
Potter County deputies investigated after Santa Fe trainmen reported a body on the railroad right-of-way six miles northeast of Amarillo. Upon arrival the man stood, spoke to officers, and admitted he believed today was Monday after an extended celebration.
Marauding dogs entered the yard at the W. A. Evans home at 1007 North Marrs last night. Evans told police this morning the casualty list included five chickens, five rabbits and two dogs.
Milton Simon Mermell was sentenced to five years in prison in Federal Court here for possessing concealing and transferring seventeen thousand eight hundred forty dollars in counterfeit currency. His pregnant companion Mercedes Maxine Callinhcos pleaded not guilty and had the indictment dismissed on DA motion. Secret Service agent James L. Lewis testified about bogus twenty dollar notes described as very deceptive with an estimated underworld value of about thirty five dollars in genuine money per hundred.
In the Sam Galway rape case 3 of 25 talesmen were chosen this morning, leaving 36 of 300 in the pool as 12 jurors likely suffice. Galway, age 9 victim case, also faces Wichita Falls burglary and assault indictments. More thefts at White Deer and Panhandle depots involved a heavy safe and tools but no explosives found.
Mrs. Josephine Allison of Dallas, who began flying after 1942, is hailed as Texas only flying grandmother. She once forced landed on a Marine bombing range near Fort Worth during a wartime flight, then continued with the All Texas Air Tour covering 3000 miles and 40 towns in seven days.

In Brownsville on October 9, four men argued over the origin of eggs at Arturo Hernandez cantina. A man struck another with a beer bottle and Hernandez was cut on the hand. All four were fined $18.80 each, one insisting the eggs were Leghorns.
