Bass was last seen in Melrose the night before and $100 lay in his car billfold. The three suspects were with him the night of the killing and evidence suggests a car chase and struggle.
The United States announced Yugoslavia has turned over 150000 dollars as indemnity for the deaths of five American airmen shot down over Yugoslavia on August 19. The State Department said it also seeks further reparations for two transport planes whose loss Yugoslavia has yet to accept.
Berlin reports a postwar Jewish population of 7 350, down from 186 000 before the war, a figure disclosed today to a Jewish assembly.

William Heirens, 17, convicted of killing Suzanne Degnan and two women, is adjudged mentally unbalanced and will be moved next week to Menard State Penitentiary for the Criminally Insane. Heirens threw rocks at a guard in the prison yard, aiming to provoke a shot. Doctors did not declare him insane but ordered psychiatric treatment with possible return to the local prison if successful.
