Paris Veteran Receives Purple Heart for Saipan Action
Paris, a Marine who landed on Saipan in an early assault wave, was wounded in the leg while guiding an officer to a forward post. He shot a Japanese sniper from a tree, then returned to his unit. Now recovering at a naval hospital, he recently received the Purple Heart from Lt. Gen. Holland M. Smith. Before enlistment in 1942, he worked as a truck driver for Allied Van Lines.
