UMW Refuses Universal District Autonomy Policy

In Cincinnati on October 8 the United Mine Workers of America rejected extending autonomy to all districts. President John L. Lewis urged cautious governance and said the international executive board will appoint district officers until districts prove businesslike administration. Delegates debated autonomy with calls for both democratic economy and centralized control amid tensions and a near-violent incident. The convention also removed Philip Murray as CIO vice president and endorsed John O’Leary as a stronger aid to the union.
