Aluminum Pile Is on Way to The Smelter

Amarillo residents contributed 12 709 pounds of aluminum plus 20 000 pounds from other Panhandle towns for shipment to Apex Smelting Company Chicago. The metal will yield enough for three bombing planes after smelting though final weight will be lower due to mixed in iron from old pots and pans.

Bear Hunt on Hinch Brook Island Ends as Boat Finishes

The narrator recounts a bear hunting trip on Hincherbrook Island with guides Gordon, Slim, and Doc. After a long day in rain and thick brush, a first bear is shot at close range, followed by a wounded bear pursued with difficulty. A second, two year old bear is killed at 71 yards, weighing 300 to 400 pounds. The party ends the hunt with venison and a voyage home aboard the S. S. Aleutian in four days.

Five New House Permits Issued in Amarillo

Building permits issued for five residences in Amarillo. Clifford McMurtry and H. Tomberlin each received two permits for frame homes at 905 Crockett, 904 Fannin, 1400 B North Tyler, and 205 Northwest Fourteenth. Fred M Seale secured a permit for a $2600 frame home at 2612 Ruly Street. Breathing room requests noted for minor additions and remodeling at 1249 Bonham, 2405 Fillmore, and 310 West 38th Avenue with costs listed as 400, 90, and 700 respectively.

Carbine to be new U S service weapon

The army selects a compact semi automatic carbine from Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven as the next field weapon. The weapon is effective to 300 yards and is chosen over six other models to replace 45 caliber service pistols. The army expects a 50 percent increase in rifle firepower in infantry regiments with carbines in use.

Travel Cost Increase Set For Midnight

Washington reports a new 5 percent federal travel tax to take effect at midnight. The levy applies to passenger travel on rail, bus, air, and ship routes, with exemptions for local buses under 35 cents, street cars, and taxis on regular routes.

Works Takes Cement Job In Amarillo Chamber Transition

Fountain Works resigns as assistant manager of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce effective Oct Vo. He will join Southwestern Portland Cement Company of El Paso and be based in Albuquerque, New Mexico after two weeks. Joe Cooley succeeds him, taking the post Oct 15 after roles in Shamrock and Oklahoma City chambers.

William Klein Family Found Dead In El Paso

The parents, brother, and sister of William Klein of 212 Sunset Street were found dead at their home in El Paso. The deaths are attributed to asphyxiation. Klein, a state FDA supervisor, was traveling in New Mexico when word reached him and he returned home.
