Weatherman predicts a wintry blast from the north sweeping into the Panhandle by tomorrow night. Temperatures may drop to the low thirties with a partly cloudy, colder spell through Wednesday night.
The cruiser Houston carrying President Roosevelt to Coco Island for a fishing excursion plowed through rough Pacific seas with squalls turning swells. The escort Portland kept pace as both ships rolled and pitched in heavy weather.
The department of agriculture estimates this year's cotton yield at 11 464 000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight based on conditions October 1. Last month 11 489 000 bales were forecast and last year production reached 9 636 000 bales. Census reports show 4 230 367 running bales ginned before Oct 1, with declines from last year. Oct 1 crop condition stood at 64.0 percent of normal.
Congressman Marvin Jones will address Amarillo and the Panhandle listeners on KGNC at 7 pm Wednesday. The half hour program targets farmers with likely discussion of new agricultural laws from the last session and details from the House agricultural committee chair.
An official communique from Rome states Ethiopian warriors attacked Hagar near the Eritrean Sudan frontier and were repulsed by Eritrean native troops under Askaris. The first communique dealing with the incident reported the unsuccessful assault and ongoing regional tension.
Premier Laval seeks to keep Britain from taking full sanctions against Italy. French officials say they fear supporting Britain if needed and note Germany’s discomfort at Franco British talks. Laval to join the league coordination committee to press for milder measures while Italy is warned of upcoming penalties for warring with Ethiopia. See WAR Page 11.
Striking farmers of the United Farmers of Illinois burned two railroad bridges and dynamited a track section to choke Chicago milk supply. Gov. Horner proposed a 30 day truce to aid arbitration as deputies battled fires along the Chicago and Northwestern line near Elgin and Gilberts.
Washington reports 1,126,234 at work on relief projects including CCC. WPA director Hopkins is 2,023,766 jobs short of the Nov 1 goal of 3,150,000, but aides expect a big jump in the upcoming figures. 1,400,000 exist already under the old emergency program. CCC peak reached 2,500,000.
Partly cloudy tonight and Wednesday with colder air by Wednesday night. West Texas and Panhandle show cooler conditions with little temperature change in New Mexico. Temperatures range from 57 to 72 degrees with 23 men reporting precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Four men questioned about a $1000 extortion attempt aimed at Mae West in Hollywood. George James, a Fox studio restaurant worker, denied involvement but was held for further questioning on suspicion of extortion. A second suspect, Janois, was arrested as he reached for a bundle of bills hidden in a palm tree.
A three judge federal court granted interdictory injunctions restraining enforcement of a gas conservation order against Texoma Natural Gas and Texas Panhandle Gas. Hearing on merits is set for October 28 in a dispute with the Texas Railroad Commission. The state argued the order supports correlative rights ensuring equal gas recovery from a common pool.
Relatives of Gen Jacob F Wolters of Houston say he is sinking fast after lapsing into unconsciousness. He was stricken last week. his condition worsened despite a brief rally. Wolters long influenced Texas politics and oil legislation and rose to major general before retirement from the Texas National Guard.
Reservations for the Marvin Jones banquet reach the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce event to be held Wednesday evening in the Crystal Ballroom at the Herring Hotel. Committees to serve are to be completed this week.
US crude production dipped to 2,760,595 barrels daily last week, down 35,736 from the prior period. Oklahoma output eased to 475,450 barrels from 492,150, California fell to 623,000, Texas slid to 1,064,962, and Kansas dropped to 143,450 barrels. The Rocky Mountain region gained to 112,480 while Eastern fields including Michigan rose to 156,035.
In Austin two different alcohol bills advance. One bill restricts by the drink sales to venues with meals and limits alcohol content to 24 percent with sales possible until midnight. The other bill, from revenue and taxation, imposes a 1.5 percent tax on gross mercantile sales to fund old age pensions and reduce the state deficit.
A federal suit over alleged water contamination by the U S helium plant west of Amarillo seeks $10 000 in damages to private property along a creek. Judge James C Wilson ruled in favor of petitioner Gib Landis and set the trial for October 24 despite government objections.
Conservatives among AFL leadership moved to block an independent labor party. The push, yearly, gained momentum at the convention with a request to the executive council to form an independent political organization. Led by David Dubinsky and Ladies Garment Workers Union leaders, the panel warned major parties may abandon labor to reactionary elements.
The Texas Centennial board of historians recommended over 100 monuments and highway markers to supplement Dallas exposition funding. They include a Potter County marker at Amarillo detailing county history and honoring Robert Potter.
