Witnesses say Keith was pulled from a cot and repeatedly beaten over the head with a hose. Keith lay on the floor beside the cot with his face covered in blood. The accused ordered him to leave, which he refused.
Oscar Lowe testified in 47th District Court that Tom Keith threatened to kill him before the May 28 beating in a Fourth Avenue cot house. He said Keith drew a knife and he struck with a hose and a putty knife, after Keith threatened to kill him, and Keith later died from a fractured skull.
Former Secretary of State Cordell Hull is in a most critical condition, the Navy bulletin reported from Bethesda Naval Hospital. Hull, who turned 75 on the night his health worsened, had a very poor night as doctors fight to save his life.
Leo Widelski swimming the Niagara River hooked a 24-pound muskellunge, 57 inches long, as it battled a carp. He hauled the muskie ashore with his bare hands, taking advantage of the fish’s distraction.

A large American Overseas Airlines DC-4 exploded and crashed 12 miles east of Stephenville Newfoundland killing 39 aboard. The flight from New York to Berlin refueled at Harmon Field before takeoff and plunged into a hillside in clear weather. Ground teams found no survivors among 28 adults, three babies, and eight crew. The disaster was described as the worst in American commercial aviation.
In Cedar Springs Michigan Mrs Fred Weaver warned before a chemistry demo that could blow up. The oxygen producing experiment with potassium chlorate and magnesium oxide exploded injuring the teacher and 28 junior high students with eye injuries and burns.

German officials and the American Military Government agreed to grant Franz von Papen Hjalmar Schacht and Hans Fritzsche safe passage to the British zone. Despite arrest warrants and police outside the Nuernberg palace, authorities withdrew the force. An escort and assurances to prevent flight were to be arranged.
President Truman said the reconversion effort is a splendid achievement but warned against complacency. He urged business, labor, farmers, and consumers to keep industrial peace, maintain high production, and push output higher where lagging. He called for an all-out focus on finished goods and keeping prices in check.

Paris October 3 Secretary of State James F Byrnes told an American Club luncheon that while allied differences over postwar peace are serious there is no imminent danger of war He noted that after every great war nations must coordinate but stressed unity ahead of peace efforts

A ten minute work stoppage crippled industry and public transport in Berlin as unions and the Leftist Socialist Unity Party protested the acquittals and prison sentences from the Nuernberg trials. The action targeted industry and transit sectors during the day.
Mrs. Emily Hall, a longtime Amarillo educator and McKinley School veteran, died at St Anthony's Hospital after a week of critical illness. She was born November 26, 1883 in Litchfield Minnesota and lived in Amarillo since 1889. Survivors include son Lyman, daughters Mrs. Leslie Parker and Mrs. C. G. Unlaub, two sisters and two brothers. Funeral arrangements are pending with N. B. Griggs & Sons.
Amarillo High School registrar Mrs. Lee Brown retires after 21 years serving about 20 000 students. She joined in 1925 as enrollment grew from 1000 to 1950 this year and handled funds and transcripts with balanced books. Her calm efficiency and people skills made her a trusted figure in the school and community.
Chinese Communist forces launched a major offensive along the Peiping Hankow railway in response to Nationalist moves toward Kalgan. The New China Agency said Reds held 10 railway stations, two county towns, and an 83 mile rail section after 12 hours of fighting, claiming 2,500 Nationalist casualties and large war material losses.
