Heaviest American taxes take their first grab
Washington Oct. 1 The heaviest taxes in American history began to take a bite as new excise levies became effective at midnight, signaling the start of the defense revenue tax bill era. The treasury expects about 3 million dollars daily from excises, with overall revenue reaching around 13 billion annually once all taxes, including income and excess profits taxes, are fully in force. Comparisons to 1918 show higher exemptions for families, larger dependent credits, steeper corporate rates, and broader estate taxes, while liquor prices rose amid the tax shift.
