Flames Ravage Lufkin Buildings

Fire Chief Harry Kerr reported a blaze at 4:25 in a two story structure on South First and Lufkin Avenue. An explosion blew out show windows at Brothers Department Store as flames spread to the adjacent three story building. The fire, blamed on heat buildup, damaged the top floors and forced extra pumping. offices and stores on the ground floor included Noble Drug Store East Texas Insurance Montgomery. Fire still burning at 7:30 but under control on first floor. See FIRE Page 2.

Continuance Requested in Haggerton Case

Denver Man Faces Theft Charge After Cafe Incident

Police say a Denver man tied to a cafe flirtation with a 17 year old girl fled in a car, led officers toward downtown, collided with a police vehicle, and was arrested after a pursuit. The stolen 197 Dodge sedan recovered belonged to J W Webb of North East Eighth Street.

Texas frost and cold snap rattles Rio Grande Valley

Freezing temps swept Texas last night with scattered frost across the lower Rio Grande Valley. McAllen down to 31 degrees, Laredo reports serious damage to tomatoes and peppers, while Bermuda onions near transplants escaped harm. Low of 16 at Salt Flat and 17 at Junction mark the coldest readings. outlook calls for cooler weather Thursday and highs in the 50s thereafter.

Quails Hunting Season Opens With Limits Set

The quail hunting season begins tomorrow morning and runs through January 16. Daily limit 12, weekly limit 36, with shooting hours from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. Shotguns must be plugged to a capacity of three shells total. Hunters under 17 or older must hold a Texas hunting license if hunting outside their home county. federal migratory waterfowl stamps are not required for quail hunters.

Thief Chased Through Amarillo After Service Station Robbery

A suspect described as an Ama rillo Negro was captured after a hours long chase across city streets. Attendants at Simpson's Service Station 810 West Sixth reported a man rifling the cash register. The suspect fled on foot then entered a taxi at Third and Jackson, prompting a pursing pickup truck to push the cab and force a stop at 1011 North West Third. He fled on foot as officers closed in pending charges.
