A brief snow storm near Tuskegee Alabama and across Texas Oklahoma and Kansas turned to rain or slush as Hirong winds diminished. Three people died in highway accidents in Georgia and Alabama and another person was missing. Two were killed on a slippery highway.
Panhandle highways were dug out after a weekend blizzard that hit Saturday afternoon and lingered into Sunday morning. Mrs. W B Amacker notes roads are passable and expected to be fully clear by noon. H C Winburn reports mild fair weather with a high near 52 and a low around 30 for Amarillo and vicinity.
A Potter County committee recommends placing the new juvenile detention home on the county farm north of the city. Other sites reviewed included Thompson Park Tri-State Fair Park and Amarillo Army Air Field hospital wards. The plan calls for a nine member board of managers with county officers and civic group appointees.
City electrician Jack Coffee and his crew started repairing storm damage to downtown Christmas decorations. Major damage included two broken stringers. Repairs expected to take two or three days, with installation on West Sixth Avenue in San Jacinto to start tomorrow.
The White House declined comment on reports that President Truman offered Eleanor Roosevelt the post of ambassador to France. reporters relayed the radio report. Ross offered no confirmation.
The 108th Judicial District Court bench will be vacant for several weeks due to Judge W E Gee’s fractured leg from a fall on ice at his home. Potter County Bar Association members voted against appointing a special judge to fill the vacancy during his absence. Judge Gee, at St Anthony’s Hospital, is not seriously injured and should be up and around in a few days, but will remain away from his office for weeks.
Fair conditions continue this afternoon, tonight, and Tuesday with warmer temperatures. Mild weather persists with warmer spells this afternoon and tonight. In the Panhandle changes bring partly cloudy and colder night skies and a 40 degree high and 24 degree low noted for the latest 24 hour period.
James Petrillo, president of the American Federation of Musicians, was named music chairman for President Truman's January inauguration. The federation will sponsor the gala concert the night before the oath, as announced by Inaugural Committee Chairman Melvin D. Hildreth.
Wage and contract negotiations that will affect about 1000 drivers and terminal employees of Southwestern Greyhound Lines were resumed here today. The talks in Fort Worth target pay scales, benefits, and working conditions for the Thank you.
The Potter County commissioners accepted the resignation of County Attorney Roy Snodgrass Jr and named John Peterson as county attorney elect and O M Calhoun as assistant. Snodgrass retires to private practice after six years in the office, effective December 1. Peterson, now attorney, and Calhoun, UT Law School graduate, assume duties then.
Red Cross led a Disaster Institute in Herring Hotel Potter Count to plan a rapid response. Tom Waggner urged creation of Survey Rescue and Evacuation Medical and Nursing and Transportation and Communication committees to handle future disasters.
Clote Robertson of 822 Mississippi wins first prize in Virgil Mixon hosted News Tips contest after a 1913 model car overturns. Second prize goes to Mrs John McElreath of 2402 Brooks for tips on three injured people. other entries list several names and addresses.
Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok formally requests admission of Israel to the United Nations, urging the Security Council to act promptly without delay. He argues Israel's entry would advance international justice for Jews and aid Middle East stability and peace.
CWA state director Ray Hackney says ballots from 19 Texas locals will be counted in Dallas on Saturday. Ballots will be nailed to the St. Louis headquarters of the independent union and results announced from St. Louis. Negotiations with Southwestern Bell for a wage increase resume December 8 in St. Louis. The vote was authorized after talks paused last September.

October business indicators in Amarillo rose from September led by an 8 percent gain in independent retail sales and 5 percent rise in department and apparel store sales. Postal receipts climbed 8 percent to 73,878, while building permits edged up 1 percent. Bank debits and deposits rose 4 and 3 percent respectively, with express shipments up 17 percent over statewide trends, though year over year permits and shipments fell. Unemployment held steady.
The Texas Employment Commission reported a 23 percent rise in placements, with unemployment down 14 percent compared to October last year and placements up 3 percent.
Globe Business Editor reports Amarillo residents spent more on food in 1947 than the national average. A 29.1 percent rise in food purchases followed, totaling 16,079,000 dollars with per capita expenditure of 238 dollars that year versus 218 nationally.
About 500 Amarillo school pupils from 11 choirs will sing carols at downtown street intersections Friday night to kick off the Christmas shopping season. Merchants and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce organize the event with chairs at Polk Third to Tenth and Taylor Fifth to Seventh. The program starts at 7 30 p.m. and lasts about 40 minutes at each intersection before gather- ing at Sixth and Polk for a final group sing.
