Russians also reach north of Csepel Island while Petrov's Fourth Ukrainian Army breaches eastern Slovakia defenses near Michalovce and Humenne, narrowing paths to Kosice and Presov. Communist forces suffer heavy losses, with 1,000 Germans killed and 750 captured in a single day.
Lt. Harry Solnick, 27, former assistant manager of the Hollywood Dress Shoppe in Amarillo, received an Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal for bravery and skill as a bombardier aboard a B 17 Flying Fortress. He joined the Army Air Forces in 1942, earned bombardier wings in 1944, and serves with the 486th Bombardment Group of the Third Bombardment Division noted for shuttle bombing of the Messerschmitt plant at Regensburg.
