Defense Guard Gels Recruits in Amarillo

Five more recruits were accepted for enlistment last night in Amarillo's Texas Defense Guard unit. Capt. A Petersen said nearly 50 guardsmen drilled, and a benefit dance on December 8 at the Nat will raise funds for overcoats and leggings. WPA sewing room in Amarillo may produce blouses for the battalion.

Pope Creates New Province in United States

Pope Pius XII raised Denver to an archdiocese forming the new Pueblo diocese and joining Cheyenne in one U S metropolitan province. Archbishop Urban John Vebb of Denver becomes head of the new province and no suffragan bishop has been appointed yet.

Comic Poet Will Perform Tonight at Salvation Army

Comic poet Thomas F B Lucy known as the man of 40 faces and 10 talents appears at the Salvation Army Citadel 03 Van Buren Street this evening at 7 30. The globe trotter has visited 16 countries and will recite poems as part of the act. The public is invited.

Cook Pleads Guilty On Espionage Charge

Rich ard H. Kleiss former chief cook aboard U S flagships pleaded guilty in federal court to espionage conspiracy charges. The trial has run since Sept 8 and evidence included a 1936 letter to Hamburg authorities. Government says he became a citizen to work on American ships and paid Germany taxes on his American income.

Water Supply Operators Receive Certificates

Certificates of qualification for water supply operators issued in Amatilie by Dr George Cox state health officer. Municipal and private operators received licenses from the state department of health after passing tests and the certificates were sent to Mayor Joe Jenkins for distribution. The health department sponsors an annual short course in Amarillo City Hall attended by operators from the Panhandle.

Trucking Tonnage Surges in October Across Nation

October motor freight tonnage rose 20 percent from a year earlier to a new high, per The Steering Wheel. Total tonnage climbed 6.9 percent from September with general freight up 22 percent to represent 65 percent of loadings. Movements of new autos and trucks fell about 10 percent from October 1940.

Bible Week Posters Sent to Amarillo by Layman's Committee

Posters heralding the First Annual Bible Week are being sent to Amarillo by the Layman's National Committee Inc with Frank Kingdom as honorary chairman. Bible Week runs December 8 to 14. Mayor Joe Jenkins received the letter and said the posters would be distributed.

Truman charges on army cost probe at Milan plant

Senator Truman says the Army’s Milan Tennessee Wolf Creek ordnance plant cost overruns stem from the constructing quartermaster losing control of contractors after hiring his relatives. The project’s original estimate was 20 million dollars, with current bills around 51 million dollars. Major Paul M. Brewer, former constructing quartermaster, is cited in the remarks.

Scout Training Starts Monday at Llano Estacado Council

Plans for the Leadership Training School of the Llano Estacado Council of Boy Scouts will begin Monday night at Polk Street Methodist Church. Scout executive Will J. Few Amarilloans Tag Their Dogs This Year

Only 100 dog tags were ordered for 1942 and issued. City officials say more can be ordered, with licenses due January 1. Male tags cost 1 and female 2, and applicants must show vaccination against hydrophobia before licenses and tags are issued.
