He endured artillery, a dirt shower, Chinese bayonets and shells, cold snow, and sleepless fear until rescued by a medic and BAR man as American voices rose above the Chinese. Whitmar weighed about 125 to 135 pounds and moved only one arm, chewing a single stick of gum until relief arrived.

Hunters asked to aid quail census in Panhandle
Panhandle hunters opening the 1951 quail season Saturday are urged to mail quail wings to the Texas Game and Fish Commission. Wings help determine bird age and guide a sustained, year after year quail crop. Last season Panhandle hunters contributed nearly half the wings and showed many quail were young.
