German Prisoners Escape Train Near Livermore

Four German prisoners of war from Rommel's Afrika Corps jumped from a slow moving train at Altamont Pass California and escaped briefly before recapture. A brakeman spotted a prisoner feigning death beside the track and the group was later recaptured near Livermore. Sergeant Hans Kirbert, 21, led the escape and was seized at the Livermore air base riding on a workman’s car.

Rats Would Make Good Thanksgiving Dinner

A French Academy of Medicine member told a Paris rat extermination meeting that rats could boost meat rations, calling rat meat of high quality and better than pork or rabbit. The remark urged public acceptance to aid rat extermination efforts. A separate report noted that a 10 percent cut in U S fuel oil use could save enough to equal 566 ocean going tankers in capacity.
