INDEPENDENCE Kans Nov 2 1938 An ambitious turtle attacked four shoats belonging to Kay Davis near here. Mrs Davis heard squeals and found the terrapin had one pig by the snout. A neighbor killed the turtle. all four shoats bore bite marks.
Reports from Chicago detail a deadly day as a black powder bomb damages a six apartment building housing Peter J. and Joseph Spingola while Arthur Hartz is found shot dead in a suburb. Hartz's fiancée cites alcohol runners tied to prohibition work as a motive. Police note Capone Aiello feud tensions subsiding under watchful scrutiny.
National Guard reports sighting a car loaded with rifles near Arroyo one mile southeast of the camp as 1,000 more men were said to be arriving in the north field. Thousands of strikers and sympathizers are in the Lafayette area while troops search for the car and occupant. Police posted Governor Adams' order declaring a state of insurrection to prevent mine workers movement.
Jack Dempsey pressed for an early New York hearing on Jack Kearns third of a million dollar suit but was denied by Federal Judge Francia A. Winslow. Dempsey's attorney Arthur Driscoll argued a lien tied up part of his property and asked for preferential calendar position.
Defense in the Cain Anderson flogging case near Marshall last June rested after closing arguments. The state’s closing was led by Galloway Calhoun, assistant attorney general, as Anderson sought to prove his whereabouts via his wife claiming he was at home the night of the incident.
Haskell Lucas, star halfback for Murray State School of Agriculture at Tishomingo, died in a Ardmore hospital from injuries sustained in a game with Agricultural College. He suffered two fractured vertebrae while making a tackle and passed away today.
Mickey Walker the middleweight champion and manager Jack Kearns were suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission for failing to respond to George Courtney’s challenge for Walker's crown. Sid Terris was warned after fouling Phil McGraw, with license revocation possible on a repeat offense.
The Rock Island railroad will provide free transportation for crippled children sent to Oklahoma City for treatment. H W Clutter announced the plan while M Beasley, head of the committee for work with crippled children, welcomed the gesture. The Santa Fe had made a similar offer days earlier.
Fire in Magna Copper mine shaft at Superior Arizona claimed seven lives with two bodies recovered and five men missing. Forty nine men were in the shaft when the blaze started at the 2250 foot level. forty two escaped. Missing include Zeno Daley and five others. Daley hailed as a hero for returning to the fire.
