Suspect Admits Slaying Boy in St Louis Hotel Case

Pollard, held for transfer to St Louis on a murder charge, reportedly admitted fatally beating two year old Joseph Nichols Jr. and hiding the body in a hotel drawer. The coroner ruled death from internal hemorrhage due to a sex attack. Pollard gave a conflicting account of events before his federal arrest for unlawful flight.

Hope Star freighter likely foundered with 37 crew

The Coast Guard announced the British freighter Hope Star may have foundered in the Atlantic. Thirty seven crew members were aboard and officials said there is little likelihood of any survivors.

Mountains Unleash New Cold Front Heads South

A fresh cold front is moving toward the area and is expected to arrive late tomorrow. Weather Bureau observer P. W. Reynolds at English Field noted the front stretches from Salt Lake City to the West Coast and is being pulled by a low pressure system.

Urge Quick Action on School Reorganization Plan

A 16 month study by an 18 member committee led to a proposal for state and local school district reorganization with mail approval of the final report. Senator James E. Taylor and Sen. Aikin urged action while foes warned against rushing the measure without public study. County officials and superintendents voiced concerns over central authority and loss of local self government.

Discovery in Roberts County deep gas and distillate field opened

Sinclair Prairie Oil and Gas Co has opened a new deep gas and distillate field in the Anadarko Basin in northwest Roberts County. Reliable observers estimate daily output of several million feet of gas and about 36 barrels of distillate from five to seven million feet of gas. Location is Lips Ranch, section 135 block C G M survey, 30 miles west of Canadian, 4 miles north of the Canadian River, 1 mile south of the Ochiltree County line. The test may extend deeper with a 9,500 foot contract. A geologist says the find indicates a new deep field, with more operations expected soon. Distillate is high gravity crude, pale yellow, with 50 to 60 gravity. Other tests nearby showed oil shows, including Big Bent and Chicken Creek, with Jenkie well noted as promising.

Dumas Robbery Suspect Nichols on Trial Faces Ten Year Term

John I. Nicholson was found guilty of robbery with firearms by Judge Harry Schulz after a one and a half hour jury deliberation. The defense cited mental distress while witnesses including his wife sister and two friends testified. A trucker testified he picked up Park and Nicholson near Dumas and drove them toward Stinnett and Pampa where Park alighted. Officers recovered about 90 dollars and a 32 caliber pistol. Nicholson, a pipeline worker, was arrested in Pampa.

Mother’s Day founder Anna Jarvis dies at 84

Anna M. Jarvis, the creator of Mother’s Day in the United States, died at age 84 after a long illness in Philadelphia. Her death ends a life tied to a national observance inspired by her mother. In a separate brief, Gov. Thomas E. Dewey ended his Arizona vacation and prepared to return to New York with his campaign team aboard American Airlines.

Koo Repeats Plea for U.S. Aid to Nationalists

Chinese Ambassador Wellington Koo urged President Truman for moral and material aid to the Nationalist government, saying he was encouraged by a White House interview. Koo met Truman after a foreign affairs session with Secretary Marshall and sought an audience with Marshall to stress urgency. He argued the Chinese situation affects world democracy.

Labor Party urges US airmen be sent home from Britain

Kingston division Labour Party officials called for immediate dispatch of US airmen and B 29 bombers from Britain. The motion warned that war remains likely while a foreign power keeps war implements on English soil. Sinclair Joins in Oil Boost

Sinclair Prairie Oil Company became the first major buyer to meet the 35 cent per barrel price rise posted by Phillipa Petroleum on Sept 28. Breen pays 300 and apologizes for false search

Breen apologizes and pays 300 dollars after a 36 hour search for him in Sawyer and Ashland counties. He and pilot Kenneth Thompson faced bad weather and motor trouble when their chartered plane diverted. Officials say no charges will be filed, but Breen received a bill for just under 900 dollars for expenses.
