Taxi driver Shorty Summers says a hen mallard flew beside his cab along Broadway at 6 AM. He grabbed the duck with one hand on the wheel after it shadowed him for about five blocks. Other ducks in the Mississippi river area were reported behaving normally.
A brutal strong-arm robbery and a lightning assault in an office left two men beaten and another pair attacked in a cab. C. W. George of Dimmitt and Wilford L. Corn of Fort Worth were among the injured, with George left unconscious and Corn robbed of about $160. Cecil Wilman and his wife were also assaulted at their Veterans Free Cab Company office. Police traced events from the Amarillo Hotel to a night club area and a ditch near 501 Crockett, with Corn remaining at a friend's home while George was hospitalized.
A drive to draft Rayburn as Democratic floor leader surfaces as Sam Rayburn reiterates he will not accept the role. CIO President Philip Murray declared the federation is not threatening strikes or roaming the nation with a club. He urged industry to bargain in good faith for fair wage deals and warned against inflationary pressure while supporting wage gains. Walter Reuther urged a war chest to back wage battles and pressed for a 20 percent GM pay rise as CIO officials defend broad labor concessions.

Many taxicab drivers in Amarillo operate without permits as the new ordinance nears. City attorney Joe Roberts says drivers may reapply between month end and December 15. permits under the old system cost $2 and required police approval. The new ordinance limits grace to 15 days and will be issued by the city commission on recommendations of a director of transportation.
