John L Lewis announced the end of his contract with the government in five days, effective Wednesday midnight. The disclosure comes as labor relations move toward a new phase amid ongoing negotiations.
Rep. John Taber of New York outlined a nine billion dollar federal cut across four areas including cutting civilian staff by up to a million and eliminating non recurring Army Navy items. He said a survey after January would tighten department staffing to boost efficiency. President Truman rejected John L. Lewis’s coal wage settlement proposal while urging serious reconsideration of the government plan.
President Truman said he is familiar with and finds fair the Krug plan for coal wages and terms. He noted Attorney General Tom Clark agrees the current government contract remains in effect and cannot be reopened without mutual consent. The plan, to be adopted by mine operators, shifts toward a direct employer union contract as labor talks proceed.
Transcontinental & Western Air ends a 25 day pilots strike with wage arbitration. 16 flights planned for tomorrow and 13 more on Sunday as operations resume, with a full schedule expected in days. International flights begin from New York to Paris Saturday.

Opera star Lawrence Tibbett will appear as guest artist at the Amarillo Philharmonic Orchestra concert in Municipal Auditorium at 8 30 tonight. He will perform arias from La Traviata and Carmen along with light numbers and discuss his love of opera and the stage. Tickets go on sale after 7 PM with downstairs at 4 80 and balcony at 3 60.

Temperatures will dip to around 36 degrees at dawn and shift from westerly to northwest tonight as the disturbance moves east of the region.

Representative Rankin of Mississippi withdrew his plan to cite Harvard astronomer Dr. Harlow Shapley for contempt. He will refer Shapley’s refusal to answer questions to a full committee meeting next Friday.
Burglars broke into the Boy Scout office at 602% Taylor last night stealing $33, an alarm clock and eight boxes of .22 calibre bullets. Entry method unknown as a small filing cabinet was broken open. An attempted burglary at Curry Motor Freight Lines on Taylor was also investigated with a back door forced.
North East Third will be used for one way traffic tomorrow afternoon before during and after the Amarillo Plainview football game. Traffic on North East Third will move east and westbound traffic will be prohibited until after the crowd disperses.

West Texas sees partly cloudy skies with scattered showers in the Del Rio Foglie Pass area this afternoon and cooler conditions tonight and Saturday. New Mexico reports fair weather through today tonight and Saturday with a 24 hour high of 62 and low of 42 at noon 55.
A 300 year old Nicholas DeLargillere portrait estimated at 5000 dollars will anchor a two week art exhibit at Amarillo’s Fuqua home 1404 Polk. Dr. Carlton Palmer curates the show for the Amarillo Public Schools art department and the Student Congress. about 150 paintings valued from 100 to 7500 dollars are for display and sale.
