Amarillo conducts its seventh annual charities campaign to raise sixty thousand dollars as workers spread across the city after a luncheon at the Herring Hotel. Chest headquarters provided no exact totals but hinted results are meeting expectations and praised cooperation led by executive secretary Mrs Anna Taylor.

Amarillo citizens who saw The World War at the city auditorium on Monday praised it as a great picture. Sponsored by the American Legion for the Christmas Cheer fund, the panorama includes real frontline footage shot by action participants with government approval. The film, shown again today and tonight and Wednesday, is described as the most comprehensive war portrayal yet and urged for broad public view.
George H. Hurford Tulsa wealthy sportsman and bookmaker disappeared from his country estate as two armed men seized him and drove away in a car. Authorities regard it as a bold ransom plot with Hurford possibly held as a hostage. Mrs Hurford and staff reported the abduction and threats to her life.
The Leonids meteor swarm lit the early sky as Earth crossed the stream. Dr. C. C. Crump of Yerkes Observatory said observers counted about 170 meteors per hour during ideal atmospheric conditions.
Charles A. Levine, held in Vienna on counterfeiting suspicions, ridiculed the charge from his prison cell. Police say he possessed a Venice ticket and ordered metal dies for forging French currency, with letters mentioning Leipzig for money forging gear and gambling counterfeiting tools. Levine asserts miscommunication with engravers and faces Vienna trial.
Two statewide oil operator meetings were scheduled in Austin to consider proration measures for the Texas railroad commission. David Donaghue, adviser to the proration committee, said the executive committee would meet Friday morning and a second session for producers from all districts would meet Friday afternoon. An anonymous donor pledged $2,000,000 to the Amateur Athletic Union.
Austin reports Dan Moody jokes that Chicago would be under martial law if he were Illinois governor to purge gangsters. Moody notes he already used martial law in Texas cities Barger and Sherman during gang and riot problems. Chicago then convicts James Sammons under an old vagrancy law as part of the city’s public enemy crackdown.
The National Woman's Christian Temperance Union reelects Ella A. Boole as president at its 56th annual convention in Houston. Democratic and Republican women issue manifestos vowing to oppose wet candidates and parties, urging dry planks and loyalty to prohibition.
Burglars used a company truck to haul stolen items from the Texas Mercantile & Manufacturing Co warehouse at 312 East Fifth Avenue. A lookout man climbed through a second story window to unlock doors, with police aided by a so called modern Oliver Twist. The empty truck was found three and a half miles east on the Panhandle highway. Five cases of cigarettes valued at unknown amount were reported as part of the theft.
Amarillo aims to host the 1931 Texas State Teachers Association convention with 10 000 delegates in Houston in 192? In Bordeaux on November 18 Dr Claude Dornier announced that the DO X would have its 12 motors taken down at Lisbon and thoroughly inspected before continuing the Atlantic flight to New York. He suggested possible changes in engine number or type. The Lisbon leg was delayed by fog and officers were unsure if the flight would resume tomorrow.
W. H. Holmes of Amarillo filed a telegram with the Texas Railroad Commission rebutting a Dallas interview with C. F. Meyer of Standard Oil. Holmes quotes Bureau of Mines and Oil and Gas Journal figures showing August U.S. production at 79,281,000 barrels and demand at 95,699,000, arguing domestic demand exceeded production and denouncing Meyer's claim as falsehood or ignorance.
In Geneva on November 18 the Preparatory Disarmament Commission adopted the first article of the naval armament section, calling for total tonnage reduction and limitation. It moved to three remaining articles on category limits and transferring tonnage between categories, mirroring the London treaty. Maxim Litvinov led the Russian delegation to secure a gain in the text, achieving majority support for the first time.
Detroit authorities unveiled indictments against ten men tied to two aerial smuggling syndicates that used 380 planes to haul liquor and aliens from Canada to the United States. Damage suit of the Kearns Grain and Seed Company against the Santa Fe Railway and the City of Amarillo is on trial in district civil court today. The plaintiff alleges construction-related overflow waters damaged elevators and storage bins at 3621 Johnson Street, with the Santa Fe suit similarly based on construction work. The cases are tried jointly.
Austin reports Jess J. Maple, reprieved an hour and a half before his scheduled execution, will have its fate decided by the Court of Criminal Appeals on November 26. Governor Moody voices disgust at last minute actions while noting Maple’s guilty plea and the sanity hearing contention.
