Scores of workers met at noon at the Herring Hotel to receive final instructions for Amarillo’s seventh annual Community Chest campaign aimed at a $60 000 goal. Lockheed executive Carl Squier announced Col. Charles Lindbergh would visit Los Angeles to fit a low wing monoplane with a larger engine new wing and retractable gear. He said the speed would rise about 50 miles per hour and Lindbergh would arrive within three weeks. It was unclear if the changes relate to a forthcoming South American flight or the origin of the departure.

The Rev. John L. Wharton resigns as pastor of Longview’s First Baptist Church effective January 1 after five years in the post. He was elected to the Baptist General Convention of Texas executive board in Amarillo last week and did not reveal his new appointment.
Communists along the Yangtse River fired on passing shipping in Hankow today. Three American steamers were attacked but escaped with little to no damage as the cannon crews manned by Communists remained active on the riverbank. Griggs ambulance. Phone 4211.
In Austin on November 17 United Press reports a split in the State Railroad Commission over gas waste prevention in the Big Lake oil field. Chairman Pat M. Neff opposes a 30 day extension to complete waste measures citing 150 million cubic feet of gas wasted daily. He left a Dallas letter for Parker while other members were away. The commission had ordered waste prevention or shutdown by November 15 with no signed extension.
Rioting and street fighting disrupted central Barcelona as a 24 hour general strike in sympathy with Madrid strikers began. Strikers and students in Plaza Universidad and Calle Cortes pelted street cars and buses while police faced a volley of stones.
River Road district seeks injunction to stop seventh grade pupil from riding Amarillo bus. The board limits bus riders to above seventh grade or riders to River Road school. Parents Whisenand defy rule. court decision postponed to next Monday.
Mid afternoon Tuesday marks the first evidences of Shrine activities in Amarillo as Khiva Temple A A O N M S members and guests gather for pre ceremonial events ahead of the Fall ceremonial on Wednesday November 19. A musical program at 730 PM Tuesday will feature Josey the renowned pipe organist with Khiva Temple Chanters at the First Baptist Church. Mrs Josey assists on violin and ushers are provided by Khivas patrol.
Amarillo gains a new presiding elder with Dr. L N Lipscomb moving from Vernon district to lead the Am arillo area. He replaces Dr. W M Pearce who completes four years in Vernon and moves to First Methodist Vernon. The changes follow the Northwest Texas Conference annual session in Sweetwater and reflect compulsory reassignments after a four year term. A broader pastorate shakeup affects several churches across the conference.
WDAG announcer Donald Bennett suspects a car theft ring stole his Graham Paige coupe, grayish green with license 947 178 from 3123 West Tenth Avenue. Police broadcast descriptions to aid recovery and Bennett offers triple rewards from the Auto Club, insurer, and himself.
Trial of C. Bailey Hankins a former Plainview minister and carpenter charged with forging a $200 check against Dr. J. K. Nunn Amarillo was continued until next Monday. Hankins has remained jailed since last September arrest in Lubbock as defense seeks time for an sanity examination and to verify a reported insanity ruling.
Health officials in Denton Texas urge closing of the historic Sam Bass cave after fever tick swarms infect nearly twenty cave explorers. Dr J J Reid links ticks carried by bats from Mexico or Central America to a fever with chills high fever and joint pain. Caverns in Mills and Llano Counties are shut. Carlsbad Caverns not yet affected.
The Federal Farm Board announced reentry into the wheat market to halt panicky selling and curb further declines. Chairman Alexander Legge said domestic conditions do not justify lower prices, while the Grain Stabilization Corporation holds about 60 million bushels from 1929 and will not compete with the 1930 crop.
