A Rock Island Railway agent shows a hobo’s stone wrapped in twine with wrist loop, carried for self protection in the hobo jungles. The agent notes many hobos carry such weapons, though they are rarely used on officers.
WPA and local agencies provided 1 226 959 man hours for October across 80 projects in the Panhandle region. Meredit h reports 323 876 spent by WPA and 140 212 by locals. 922 999 man hours total. New projects include farm to market road upgrades in Hansford Potter and Amarillo areas and sewing rooms in Hansford Randall and Potter counties.
Orla Allen was named president of the Amarillo Kiwanis Club at a regular Monday meeting. New officers include First Vice President Sim Kelly and Second Vice President Clay Thornton with a slate of directors: Galen Battey Milt Cox Gari Jenkins Guy McSwain Bruce Autry L. M. Fischer Mason King Ted Lakey and Jeff Neeley. Cameron Beck spoke on opportunities for youths entering business. Junior students from the Pred Douglas School performed several musical numbers.
Attendance at Amarillo High School in October reached 6.1 percent absence, equaling the 1937 rate. The system has students writing their own absence passes, adopted this year, and the high school reports a 96 percent attendance, above the average for most high schools per Principal R. B. Norman.
A Scholarship Society is being organized in Amarillo High School under the Student Congress. Eligible students must maintain an average grade of B on full time courses throughout high school. The group aims to promote scholarship and encourage active student cooperation in school activities. Applications are being received by faculty members.
The New Hope Baptist Church on 313 Jackson Street will host a benefit evening of old time Negro spirituals. Admission is free, but a special offering will be taken to help complete the church. Pastor Balding J. E. Anderson announced the public is invited.
BE. F. Rittenberry has resigned from the city's zoning appeal board. The resignation was accepted by the city commission. Joe Jenkins presided in Mayor Rogers absence and requested a letter of thanks to Rittenberry. Other board members are Durham Bast Ricks and Fain. City Manager Smith has not recommended a replacement.

The Texas Insurance Agents of the seventh district hold a 10 o'clock meeting in the Canary Room at the Amarillo Hotel. Invited are all area insurance men. RB. A. Clark, president of the Texas State Association, and D. G. Foreman will attend. Marvin Hall and Dick Waters will speak along with a Texas Insurance Checking Bureau representative. Local officers Jeff Neely, Dorsey B Smith, and Ed Spann will be in attendance.
Albert Kennedy Rowswell guest speaker at tomorrow night's Knife and Fork Club dinner at the Country Club is a noted orator humorist and philosopher. He reportedly spoke 328 words per minute in a newspaper feature and travels nationwide for engagements. Col W R Gilks of the Salvation Army will be guest speaker at Amarillo High School's Thanksgiving assembly Tuesday. Principal R B Norman announced the event. Gilks, a London native, is described as highly educated by Salvation Army adjutant William Johnson.
Police Inspector Eddie Lyons of Birmingham and Hoover’s staff will visit Amarillo Saturday and Sunday to lead a conference hosted by local peace officers. Lyons, brother in law of Julius Godjeski of Mission Jewelry, is presently on leave from the institute at the University of Oklahoma and will soon conduct a school for his department.
Ross Rogers listed as right halfback and may be demoted from starter if not in peak condition. Amarillo Bulldogs and Sandies prepare for Friday night showdown at Civic Bowl Classic under Butler Field lights. Referee Dutch Mantell appoinced. captains are Clay Thornton and Cal Farley. Coaches Bill Hale and Ralph Dykeman announce joint practices at Amarillo College Field and Maverick Field with rest day planned.
The Bible Animal Circus will present a special program Wednesday morning at Amarillo High School announced by principal R B Norman. The show features three ponies four monkeys five Eskimo dogs a bear and many performing birds as the first Southern School Assembly Forum program for 1938 39. The public is invited.
Plane construction will be discussed at the Prop and Wings Club weekly meeting at the Amarillo Hotel tomorrow night at 8. Dave Blettner, club instructor, will cover old and new airplane construction and outline future topics including engines meteorology and navigation. The ground school is open to the public and aims to give lay readers a general, accessible knowledge of aviation.
Francis Marion Anderson 91 retired farmer died this morning at his daughter Cora Simmons 1204 Lincoln Street Amarillo. He had lived with his daughter six years and was a Primitive Baptist Church McLean member and a Mason. Survivors include five daughters and three sons with funeral plans pending tomorrow by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Government construction engineers who will oversee the Veterans Hospital project are set to arrive in Amarillo within the next week or ten days, per information received by Postmaster W. D. DeGrassi.

Miss Helen Hulick a 28 year old kindergarten teacher defied court orders and wore pants to a burglary case in Los Angeles. She was jailed briefly and faces a five day contempt punishment when her case returns to court with Superior Judge Clarence L. Kincaid presiding.
The wife of American Consul General John K. Caldwell was fired upon by suspected bandits in the grounds of the Tientsin race club but was not hit. The consular corps met to discuss recent incidents including a Russian dairyman's murder an assault on a hospital matron and a Belgian residence burglary near the course.
Mrs. Albert Walker WPA historian says the banquet moved from Blackstone Hotel to Cousins Hall at West Texas State College Canyon for November 22 at 7 PM to accommodate a larger crowd. Speakers will review WPA progress in the Panhandle and the region’s historic development from ancient times to today.

A public hearing delayed action pending a protest map for Thirty sixth Avenue. Petitioners seek residential zoning for retail district land currently used for shopping, opposing by O H Hargett and Bill Askew citing long retail taxes.
Two WPA exhibits from the Panhandle will be sent to the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Birmingham Alabama in November 2023. Mrs Albert Walker supervisor of women's and professional women's projects announced the two items include a model Irish apartment house found north of Amarillo on the Canadian River and a model of the Preventorium project buildings. Also on display will be Indian tools war implements and agricultural items.
Sam Arnold of Kirksville Missouri visits sister Mrs. J Francis Brown and Dr Brown at 3000 Harrison Street. Brown is the southpaw amateur golf champion of Missouri.
Reservations for tonight's Rose Bowl Dinner at the Rose Bowl Tea Room in its new Sixth Avenue and Tyler Street location may be made this afternoon by calling 6103. A capacity crowd attended last night with patrols expected again, as the Junior Welfare League opens the Rose Bowl to support its free pre-school clinic.
