City considers lower water rates for big users

Amarillo officials propose new water rates to cut costs for users over 100 000 gallons monthly starting December 1 if three railroads agree to buy water from the city. Rates drop to 17 1/2 cents per thousand at 100 000 plus, 30 cents at 160 000, 25 cents at 300 000, and 22 1/2 cents at 500 000. Mayor Bartlett says supply is secured if railroads cooperate.

New Tax Rates At A Glance For City County And Schools

The document outlines city and school tax rates, total rate changes from last year, and example payments. Assault with Auto Charged in Welice Court Today

Captain Lee Miller filed a charge of assault with a motor vehicle in Welice Court against J H Cox of the El Paso Paving company. The incident at Thirteenth and Tyler streets injured Junior Coughran, 1211 Johnson street, who was walking home from school. Investigators found the brakes of Coxs truck faulty and Miller vowed strict action against unsafe braking. The boy’s condition was reported as fair.

Dallas Man Slain During Altercation

Murder charges were filed in Dallas against P. A. Derrick, a rent car driver, after J. R. Stoddy, a 24 year old taxi driver, died from knife wounds in an altercation. Officials reported the fatal stabbing and ongoing investigation.

One Day's Pay Campaign For Chest Drive Gathers Steam

A list of 100 percent firms submitting employee pledges for one day’s pay to the Community Chest drive shows strong early support toward the $45 000 budget for six charities. Guy C Saunders reports many firms are using pledge cards and assigning solicitation to a single member. Additional firms are forming and a public list of names will publish Sunday.

Amarillo Tax Burden Sees Mix Of Wins And Costs

Tax totals for Amarillo show a yearly bill of 1 701 401 52 to fund city county and schools with a city share of 705 247 06 schools 469 700 and county state 526 454 46. State county and schools also gain 109 000 from the 15 per capita apportionment.

Gas Victim Mrs Wharton Saved by Electrician Rescue

Mrs C M Wharton of 205 North Buchanan was treated in a local hospital after inhaling gas at her home. Electrician W W Clark forced entry, found her unconscious near a gas jet, shut off the gas, and carried her to fresh air before summoning aid. She was taken to St Anthony's sanitarium and expected to recover. Clark said the door was locked and he entered through a window after failed key attempts. Her husband runs a domino parlor.

Railroad Man Is Killed at Ranger

In Ranger Texas last night Ralph McFarland a 50 year old brakeman for the Texas and Pacific railway was killed when an eastbound train collided with a stationary freight train. Robert Lewis of Warren Ohio was severely injured with a crushed leg and condition described as critical after surgery.

Dempsey Case Jury Chosen in Newark Federal Court

A jury was selected in Newark New Jersey for the case of Jack Kearns versus Jack Dempsey over a claimed 538393.34 fee under a management contract. The trial opened with both men present and a crowd gathering outside the court. Opening statements were to begin after jury instructions.

Light Damage From Three City Fires

Fire officials report three separate blazes in the city with total damage under $1,000. A Pierce Street home owned by J. Stevens and rented to R. J. Sykes sustained about $500 from a gas leak blaze. A Locust Street grocer store owned by the Denney estate and operated by M. E. Sellers burned about $200 after a gas stove blaze near a wall. A small chicken shed also caught fire prompting police to respond.

Dr Faiman's State License Revoked

Dr C C Faiman, a state witness in the Shephard McClintock case in Chicago, has had his state license revoked in a diploma mill dispute and has disappeared from his usual haunts. The McClintock trial alleged he furnished germs used in the murder.

Pipeline work to start December in Devine Colorado

About four hundred men will begin work December 1 on the Denver to Amarillo pipeline project. Thirteen car loads of pipe have been received from the East, according to David Williams of Williams Brothers, the successful bidders for the construction contract.

Four Bodies Uncovered in Gas Plant Blast

In Pittsburgh the Equitable Gas Company recovered four bodies from the Pittsby clay pot plant wreckage after a gas tank explosion. The death toll reached twenty six as workers continued digging, with Edwin Smith among the dead and two more unidentified victims found.
