Baritone Don Dickson Opens Amarillo Philharmonic Season

Navy hero Dixie Kiefer killed in Mount Beacon crash

Commodore Dixie Kiefer a Pacific war hero with 10 major wounds in two wars died when a Navy plane crashed near Mount Beacon. Five others perished. Kiefer 49 commanded First Naval District air bases from Quonset R I and was known for The Fighting Lady film. Wreckage found after flight from Caldwell to Quonset. The First Naval District confirmed his death.

Funeral Services Set for Idaho Senator on Thursday

The body of Senator John Thomas will be flown to Gooding Idaho on Wednesday for burial. Nobel Peace Prize for 1945 Awarded to Cordell Hull

Greyhound May Hire New Men Amid Bus Strike

Officials of Southwest ern Greyhound Lines indicate possible hiring of new drivers to resume service as the seven state strike continues. Paul W. Tibbetts said discussions on hiring will occur this week. Union members cite demands for a one cent per mile raise and better conditions as barriers to return. In Amarillo the Union Bus Station is closed by health officials over lounge sanitation issues as buses halt operations.

Heat on bringing home all men eligible for discharge grows

Washington reports the Heat is getting hotter to bring home all men eligible for discharge as the War Shipping Administration follows joint chiefs of staff orders. Army crews are stretched with 280 soldiers on mess duty and 200 on radio work in San Francisco, while the overall return schedule aims to stay within seven days of plan by January 1.
