Four men and a woman were held as suspects in the kidnapping of Alexander Berg president of a fur company after a raid on a club house by the Meramec River near St. Louis. Police said arrests were made but gave few details. A note demanding 25 000 dollars and stating Berg was OK was found in a rural mailbox and turned over to police.
The steamers Costa Rica and Geisha stood by for a possible rescue of eleven men in a life boat and on a raft in the Caribbean Sea about eighty miles west of Cartagena Colombia. Pan American messages from Capt Frank Ormsbee aboard the Commodore Seaplane reported sighting ten men in the boat and one on a raft.
J. T. Barrelson a 69 year old watchman for the Texas and Pacific Railroad died after being crushed beneath a box car at a Fort Worth crossing. He had safeguarded lives there previously and it is believed he moved too close to advancing cars.
Tokyo reports the death of Viscount Eiichi Shibusawa, Japan's renowned business leader known as the Grand Old Man of business, passing away on Wednesday November 11.
The Armistice Day celebration in Amarillo features the largest parade in history with about 40 floats and 1000 marchers. Events include a college football game, Legion banquet, Poppy Day sale, and Red Cross roll call, with mayor declaring a holiday and schools and courts closed. Martha Fall, granddaughter of former interior secretary Albert B. Fall, turned down a movie career to join the El Paso Herald-Post as a reporter. She had been named most beautiful girl in a local high school and, after graduation in June, began a feature series titled Winning A Wife in the Herald-Post.
Southwestern Bell says its Amarillo franchise runs to about July 1 1932 and the company will not discuss renewal before then. G N Hailey district manager says negotiations may occur after that date while the city manager Bill Durham says the commission is ready to discuss and possibly close a franchise tonight. The two announcements mark the latest phase of Amarillo’s telephone rate fight and city officials declined comment while hinting at developments after the meeting.
In Nueces County Texas the state for the first time introduces the corpus delicti of a slain person as the major exhibit. Don Carlis, on trial for the murder of Alfred Steinbach, 20, Cincinnati, sits as a skeleton is brought in. Undertaker Maxwell P. Dunne identified the remains found near Flour Bluff September 1. Defense objects but offers no formal objection. The exhibit remains until expert testimony ends.
Lubbock reports more than 5,000 new members added to the Federated Clubs of Texas through 140 clubs in two years. The total reaches over 65,000 with 63 clubs organized last year, while funds for a permanent Austin headquarters are being raised. Corpus Christi bids to host next convention amid lively district support.
Barney Lee Ross, 23, was found guilty in district court of criminally confronting a 45 year old white woman at a farm near Daingerfield on November 6. The jury set execution for December 16.
A Pacific Northwest and Northern California storm brought rain and snow last night with seven inches of snow in Yellowstone and seven and a half inches at Crater Lake Oregon. Washington Oregon and Idaho faced inland rain and snow with Northern Nevada also forecast.
In Jonesboro Arkansas on November 10 the widow of Thaddeus H. Caraway emerged as the likely choice to fill his unexpired Senate term after Mayor H J Bosler announced she would accept the nomination if offered. Bosler spoke as a family friend and Democrat official. Mrs Caraway has long studied politics and shares her late husband's wit and political inclination.
Public hearings by the legislative tax survey committee delayed from today to tomorrow because some members could not attend earlier.
In Mukden on November 10 an autonomous provincial government favoring Japan was formally installed with Japanese officers present. Yuan Chin-Kai was named governor, and Japanese leaders directed the ceremony while Chinese speeches were translated into Japanese. General Miyaki of Lt. Gen. Shigeru Honjo’s staff voiced wishes for the new government’s prosperity.
Geneva reports say a police force to safeguard Manchuria may be discussed at Monday’s League of Nations council meeting. It could protect Japanese nationals with China’s consent and Japan’s troop withdrawal from the railway zone. Japan’s consent and China’s support are uncertain but likely respectively. Britain France and the United States expected to be asked to join.
