Beef cattle outlook poor says bureau
The Agriculture Department through its Bureau of Economics issued a cautious outlook for beef producers over the next two years with prospects for cattle feeders improving in the coming year. Prices for grass cattle, slaughter cattle, and stockers are at record lows, while transport and marketing costs are at peak. Shipments rise as range feed shortages and finance pressures push cattle out, keeping beef supplies large even as consumer demand stays weak. Cattle numbers are expected to climb for two years, though a future decline in cow herds would help regain profitability. Imports fell overall this year except for canned beef, and October 1 cattle and calves on farms stood about 2.5 million head higher than last year.
