Reds Overrun Heights in Muddy Korean Front Battle
Two Chinese battalions swept into a key position northwest of Yonchon as UN infantry were driven from advanced areas near Korangpo on the 38th parallel. Allied counterattacks pushed Reds back, while westward heavy rain hampered attacks and artillery roared along the front. Red gunners knocked out five Allied tanks on the east central front and Communist jet fliers challenged Allied jets in three brief engagements, with no casualties reported by the Fifth Air Force. Truce talks at Panmunjom saw a new buffer-zone proposal from the Communists, but UN officials warned it carried ambiguities and hesitated on any firm judgment.
