The celebration meeting sent greetings to Stalin whose absence was not explained. Zhdanov, named as a possible successor, quoted Stalin and drew applause. He asserted opposition from Britain and the USA to the Soviet program for a democratic peace, stressing global peoples who fought fascism.
In a broadcast from Moscow Bolshoi Theater, Zhdanov, chairman of the Supreme Soviet, told a celebration meeting that Russia is emerging stronger from war conditions. He contrasted with capitalist power and noted leaders and army chiefs in attendance.
U S Senator Dennis Chavez led challenger Maj General Patrick J Hurley in New Mexico after 618 of 869 precincts counted with Chavez 56527 to Hurley 55999. In Chicago the Kelly machine crumbled as Republicans led in major county posts and offices. Enos A Axtell beat Reeves in Missouri and Carl Carlson led Woodring in Kansas. Helen Mankin refused to concede in Atlanta contest and Garner commented after eye surgery in San Antonio.
The coast to coast Republican victory gives the GOP control of both houses for the first time in 15 years. By mid afternoon 223 House seats and 51 Senate seats were reported, with several contests undecided. President Truman traveled from Independence to Washington after a crushing defeat, while Gov. Dewey won re election in New York and three other governors shifted to Republicans.
Sen. J. William Fulbright says President Truman should resign after naming a Republican Secretary of State who would become President. He argues a two year stalemate with a Republican Congress could threaten U S world leadership and proposes Arthur H. Vandenberg as the Republican successor to Byrnes.
National protest vote against Democrats echoed in Potter County where Republican Eugene Nolte conceded early. Democratic Beauford Jester led in county races for governor with 3 800 votes to Nolte’s 686. Murray Sells 830 votes for U S Senate compared to Tom Connally 3 466. Gene Worley reelected to Congress in the 18th district. Potter County box Allison School unreported with about 50 votes estimated.
Polls open 8 to 7 in Potter County as voters decide a constitutional amendment to create a veterans land board for acquiring surplus federal lands for sale to Texas veterans. Support comes from the American Legion and state leaders. results show strong early approval of three amendments while Panhandle returns lag due to weather.
The Amarillo city commission suspends routine rules to approve a $500000 airport bond election for November 30. The plan funds half to buy Thornton Oxnard’s English Field stake and the other half for airport improvements. Voters will decide the city’s aviation future and polling places, with the chamber of commerce long backing acquisition.
Yugoslavia offered two minor concessions to the Big Four in the Trieste dispute while insisting the French boundary line remains its own. Foreign Minister Stanoje Simic spoke at the Waldorf. he warned the line would cause severe economic and political harm and said Yugoslavia would not sign the Italian treaty without better terms. The concessions include increasing Trieste international territory by about 44 square kilometers and renouncing control over the Trieste governor appointed by Yugoslavia, with a UN Security Council appointment instead.
Weather eased in the Panhandle but the road network stayed snarled. AAA reported complete suspensions on Highways 60 66 87 and 287 with fresh snow near Cline's Corner and lines delayed across Route 54 and 287 to Stratford. Rail and air travel faced continuing delays as trains ran hours late and Braniff canceled Denver flights.
Bill Robinson brings his acclaimed revue to The State tonight with Bojangles and the Deep River Boys. Reserved seats only remain with lower floor tickets at 3.25 and 2.50, balcony at 2 and 1.30, tax included. Box office open from now until curtain at 8:15 or sold out.
The Harris elementary school building in Hillsboro has been condemned by the board of school trustees. Officials plan to relocate 186 pupils as Arthur Wittman urged immediate abandonment due to faulty gas installations.
Chicago reports the quartermaster corps is shipping ten million pounds of turkey worldwide for Army Thanksgiving dinners. Procurement commenced in July.
Samuel Turner Fagan a Panhandle pioneer and former Sherman County judge died at his home 309 North Buchanan at 6 30 this morning. He was 85 and had lived in the region 46 years. Survivors include two daughters five sons two sisters and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending with Blackburn-Shaw.
Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Thursday with rising temperatures. West Texas shows similar conditions with brief rain in the Panhandle this afternoon. New Mexico forecasts fair skies and warmer conditions with a high near 38 degrees and a low around 28. Precipitation 0.26 inches.

Amarillo reports a quiet spell with no offenses last night and only one minor collision at Sixth and Milam this morning. Police note fewer drunkenness arrests than usual while four minor crashes occurred yesterday and two the night before. Local ads promote Dennison labels and lumber from John Maynard Lumber Co.
Washington reports results by state with party changes and incumbents. It lists Alabama to Maryland outcomes including Senate wins, House seat gains, and governors, noting races in progress and undecided where applicable.
New York November 6 stock trading opened with a brief rally as Republicans won the ballot landslide but quickly faded. U S Steel slipped from up 1.50 to 0.25 negative, American Telephone fell 1.50, U S Rubber dropped 1.75, Montgomery Ward down 1.25, with other leaders losing ground. Cotton futures dropped 2.25 to 5.10 a bale.
