Borger city commissioners on first reading accepted a $125,000 bid from Joseph A. Greenspon and Sons for a natural gas system serving about 1,100 customers and granted a related 20 year electric franchise at an 8 cent maximum residential rate. Service was restored after a city utility dispute. Panhandle Power and Light cut service over a $16,000 two year old bill. Mayor Miller called the outage retaliation for seeking lower rates.
Alphonse and Ralph Capone, convicted tax dodgers, may be sent to Leavenworth, Kan. Alphonse heads to begin an eleven year sentence after his appeal, while Ralph begins a three year term after the Supreme Court denied review. Ralph travels from Miami to Chicago to surrender.
High winds at Lakehurst New Jersey forced the giant Navy blimp K-1 to be grounded. The airship ripped its envelope and collapsed against the hangar while the crew released it. No injuries were reported to Lieut Bailey and the two officers.
Will Rogers will speak at 9 p.m. tonight over station WOAI and the National Broadcasting Chain from San Antonio. He arrives from Mexico City and follows remarks by Mayor James Walker of New York and Mayor Anthony Cermak of Chicago among other national figures including Slip Madigan Chick Meehan and the four Notre Dame backs.
Democrats gain the House majority with New Jersey governor Harry Moore elected and Kentucky results close. Michigan’s eighth district shifts to Democrats for the first time in 33 years while Ohio’s Longworth district stays Republican. House tally 217 Democrats 215 Republicans with vacancies looming.
In yesterday's elections Democrats lead Republicans by two in the next House with one vacancy to be filled. Three of five contests have been won by Democrats, signaling a favorable tilt for the party.
An early morning quake in northeast Japan sank the uninhabited Island of Sankan off Port Kamaishi. No deaths or major property damage were reported though lines were cut and fences toppled. Thousands slept outdoors after the tremor, with experts saying the shock was unrelated to the Kyushin Island quakes.
Lew H Wentz Republican member of the Oklahoma highway commission announced plans to resign and return to private business within weeks. Former chairman of the commission he will focus on his oil interests and work for crippled children in Ponca City after leaving for Dallas to discuss the Texas issue.

Mrs Harris Masterson of Houston currently holds the post and the session planned adoption of a work program plus resolutions and officer elections.
Wheat prices rose from 1 2 to 3 4 cents above yesterday's close at 12 30 PM on the Chicago Board of Trade. Trading began with a rush as buyers snatched offerings, then Liverpool weakness and trader liquidation pulled figures down before a mid day upturn.
Farmers stored about 225000000 bushels in Kansas Oklahoma Nebraska Missouri and Texas as grain kept in bins garages and tents faced the weather. Wheat prices rose to 40 to 45 cents at country elevators boosting potential gains for Kansas Nebraska Oklahoma Texas and Missouri totaling several tens of millions of dollars.
The Hoover Navy League inquiry committee locates missing member John Hays Hammond in Massachusetts and plans its first meeting in Washington. Hammond, a mining engineer, will join four colleagues as they begin investigations of charges against President Hoover by Navy League president William Howard Gardiner. Two Potter County men won reversals of prison sentences and new trials by the criminal appeals court. Paul Hastings saw his five year sentence for criminal assault reversed after defense counsel could not cross examine the principal witness about prior conduct. Andrew Tucker secured a new trial for a two year sentence tied to the shooting death of T D Whatley due to a defective venire.
Dallas readers report a $50,000 slander suit by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Woods against Mrs. Mittie B. Haefer and others ended with a jury verdict for the defendants. Woods, a former speaker of the Texas House, claimed damaging reports were circulated.
William Gordele Beck, 19, a former University of Texas student, confessed to the murder of O. L. Jones in Waco. He blamed detective magazines replacing textbooks and quipped that a perfect crime course might have altered his fate.
