At Turkey Pen precinct Danville Kentucky November 4 1940 a confrontation over negro voting led to the fatal shooting of Fd Doneghy by Joe Hayden 66 a white Democratic challenger Hayden said self defense witnesses described Doneghy advancing and reaching for a weapon four shots fired Hayden was arrested posted bond and returned to the booth as the sheriff noted Doneghy had a reputation for being bad.
Edward Kotowski age 21 confessed at a police station that he killed Frank Slim Smurlo and William Smooth Sierra in self defense after a drunken dispute at a beer flat. He said Sierra threatened him and Smurlo reached for another gun during the conflict.
