Plans for Rerouting W through City Underway
County Engineer Ryder reports completion of preliminary engineering for rerouting U S Highway 66 through the city. Funds from state and federal governments are not yet assured, but the office stands ready. The new route leaves the current path at Conway, connects with the Colorado to Gulf highway near Washburn, includes an underpass at the Rock Island crossing and a grade crossing over the Fort Worth and Denver tracks, then runs via Washburn to Amarillo and along Tenth Street to Canyon road with another Rock Island crossing underpass. The existing route has five grade crossings and would bypass the main business district.
