State police statisticians warned of vast carnage on Texas highways as November and December bring lowered visibility and holiday travel. They project 360 more deaths and 1 620 total for 1938, with 2 000 plus injuries and hospital costs. Director Homer Garrison Jr cites high speeds as the main danger and notes an 18 percent drop from last year due to public campaigns.
National Labor Relations Board members told President Roosevelt they oppose changes to the labor relations act. After a White House conference Chairman J Warren Madden said the act does not need amendment. Madden Edwin S Smith and Donald W Smith discussed operation but not amendments. AFL and Donald R Richberg had urged changes, AFL warning on CIO bias and opposing Smith’s reappointment. Richberg proposed stronger employer protections.
R G Mills, general chairman of the Community Chest 1939 budget drive, calls a 4 pm meeting in the Canary Room at the Amarillo Hotel for chairmen and workers to review methods and results. A downtown parade opened the campaign last weekend as teams solicit. women in business outpace men. Over $16 000 raised through Saturday. Mills says citizens must be urged to participate until the budget is met.

A Comei News Agency dispatch from Hsinking Manchukuo reports that 12 Russian cavalrymen crossed into Manchukuo near Pogranichnaya and attacked three Japanese border patrolmen. Two patrolmen were believed killed in the clash.
Washington November 2 bids open for construction of three 35000 ton battleships as part of a billion dollar naval expansion. Each ship is estimated at about 75000000 dollars and the program aims for completion by 1942. The West Virginia was the last battleship finished in 1923, with North Carolina and Washington started a year ago and roughly one quarter complete. The ships to be named Alabama Indiana and Massachusetts will push the fleet toward modernization.
New York November 2. Professor Harry D. Gidense told Barnard College undergraduates swing music is a bad influence on the country. He compared swing to musical Hitlerism and warned that detachment from emotion and extreme specialization breed emotional starvation that could foster a dictator promising mass thrills.
New York November 2 Owens-Illinois Glass Company and Corning Glass Works announce the creation of Owens-Corning Fiberglass Corporation to manufacture glass textiles. The venture, funded by the two giants, will run plants in Newark Connecticut and Corning. Chairman Nicki Amory Houghton and president Harold Boeschenstein note seven years of joint research and about 5 million dollars spent developing a product with wide uses from home appliances to industry. The fibers promise lighter vacuum cleaners, heat resistant insulation, and new materials for batteries, pipes, filters, and aircraft and building insulation.

Amarillo police chief W R McDowell announced Russell Rusty Gifford as sergeant. One of the department’s youngest officers, he began duty on the night desk at headquarters last night after a temporary appointment by Earl D. Moore following J A Kirkman’s resignation. Gifford was a postal employee for nearly nine years before becoming an officer.
A mild cow owned by Mrs. Claude Walser on River Road mourns a pig she mothered. The calf died days after birth, milk theft suspicions arose until the cow witnessed the pig eating breakfast this morning. The pig is penned away, leaving both animals disconsolate.
Albert Heise, 14, ran away from Columbus home as cold weather arrived. His mother told police he left a note promising to return when warm weather comes. The case centers on his disappearance and planned return timeline.
Announcement confirms the name change from Stone & Gulerie to Stone & Stone. Ben H. Stone and Robert A. Stone will continue at the Oliver EFakle Building on the seventh floor. Ben H. Dr. David H. Carson a 61 year old Kerrville physician was found dead in his car near the San Antonio Kerrville highway. He had been shot above the right eye and a .32 caliber pistol lay at his feet. Authorities said he was kidnapped the previous day and that a former Legion Hospital patient believed to be a parolee may have been involved. The sheriff noted a bank loan slip and the car showed signs a passenger became ill during travel.

The Ford Motor Company introduces an entirely new lower mid price car, Mercury Eight, on display Friday November 4 at Walter Irvin Inc 205 Taylor Street. It features a 116 inch wheelbase 12 inch springbase and 195 inch overall length with wide curved sides narrow running boards and spacious interior. The design follows Ford Lincoln styling with large fenders low radiator grille and flowing contours. Hood peaks at the prow and blends into the windshield and body lines.

Australian amateur radio operator James Ferrier heard three messages broadcast over W5XF Amarillo police calls from Sydney to Amarillo. He notified headquarters by letter after observing the times 7 31 P M Tuesday Oct 4 and 11 31 A M Wednesday Oct 5. Malcolm Clack, police radio supervisor, verified the broadcasts and a letter with a receiver photo arrived.
Roy Greenhill an Amarillo insurance man suffered severe bruises and lacerations to the knees when his car collided head on with a vehicle driven by David Middleton at Crockett Street and North Julian Boulevard. Middleton escaped injury and Greenhill was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital where his condition was described as fairly good.
Warsaw reports rising friction between Poland and Nazi Germany over the deportation of Poles from Germany and passport hurdles. Polish circles fear German aims in Ukraine, including possible Ukrainian autonomy under Nazi influence, which could threaten Poland's eastern borders and provoke future clashes with Soviet Russia.
