Two men armed with German Lugers tried to force Blair House gates as President Truman remained inside. White House guards shot both attackers. one died on arrival at Emergency Hospital, a second was killed, and a third escaped. Three guards were wounded in the gun battle.
The UN General Assembly extended Secretary-General Trygve Lie for three more years by a 46 to 5 vote with 7 abstentions, despite Soviet bloc threats to boycott. The General Assembly rejected a Soviet move to refer the Korean issue back to the Security Council after a month of debate. Russia failed to sway enough votes as Lie won support to stay on in the 40 000 year role while Vishinsky renewed pressure.
The action centered near Sinuiju on the Manchurian border with U S F-80s reporting eight destroyed Yak ground units and sightings of 20 to 25 more aircraft. A Mustang flight reportedly faced six enemy jets resembling the F-36 Sabre in speed records context.

Mayor Gene Klein says the Amarillo city commission will ask the Potter County grand jury to investigate prostitution in the city. He notes the police method uses arrests and fines but urges an impartial inquiry to verify efficiency and integrity of officials and the system. Yellow Cab and Baggage Company workers walk out seeking formal union recognition from Hamp Benton. About 39 drivers, including day and night crews, halt most operations while a few cars stay on the road. Union rep Maurice Mitchell says 97 percent of employees are in the IBT affiliate and accuses the company of refusing to negotiate. Panhandle forecast calls for dry weather for several days, with off and on cloudiness in parts of the Panhandle, South Plains, and El Paso area.
