Suzie the cat of Mrs. H. Prescott raises three kittens and a Chihuahua puppy adopted into the family. Benito the pup is welcomed after a cautious start, and the two young animals grow up with Suzie’s litter amid playful, wandering antics.
Ground is to be broken within two weeks for a 225000 addition to the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company building. A O Thomas district manager said the project is classified as essential industrial construction under the Civilian Production Administration. C S Lambie and Co are the contractors. Equipment is being built now and due in Amarillo in July with two months to install. Completion would clear waiting lists around October 1.
Washington reports a 250 million dollar annual price rise for dairy products with further hikes likely if subsidies are cut. Stabilization Director Chester Bowles says the increases add about one cent per quart of milk, 11 cents per pound of butter, and six cents per pound of cheddar cheese, effective early June. The final amounts will be fixed when the date is set.
New York May 30 markets in the United States were closed for Memorial Day while Canadian and British markets remained open.
Tornadic winds over 100 mph lashed areas near San Antonio and Dallas causing extensive damage. Kelly Field suffered heavy losses including 23 planes destroyed and 400 hutments blown down. Dallas area faced flooding and hail with crops and property losses over 1 million. Wires cut south of San Antonio disrupted AP feeds to Laredo and Mexico City.
National Housing Authority Director Wilson Wyatt ordered district offices not to exceed housing construction quotas. Amarillo, under Fort Worth, faces a first half 1946 quota of 5 257 units. The halt targets urban housing priorities through July 1 to align with material and labor supply.
The Hud son and Manhattan Railroad walks out with 500 trainmen and engineers amid new and threatening strikes. 400,000 soft coal miners resume work while 76,000 Pennsylvania anthracite miners plan midnight walkout, spurring a national labor clamp. President Truman sets a 30 day fact finding panel. Labor Dept moves to avert seafaring strike and presses Allis Chalmers J I Case plants dispute toward possible seizure.
Earl L. Mayne, 55, office engineer to the Santa Fe Western Lines chief, died at 3:30 this morning at St. Anthony's Hospital after a heart attack. He joined the Santa Fe in 1914, served in World War I, and rose from rod man to office engineer in 1939. Born September 7, 1890 in Darlington Wisconsin, he was a Colorado alumnus, member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion, and a charter Amarillo Country Club member. Austin May 30 AP Gov Coke R Stevenson announced he would not seek re election in a formal noon press conference. He cited two terms precedent and his personal and public considerations while noting many urged him to run again. He said he would not run for a third term and thanked supporters then indicated the decision was final.
In Powell River British Columbia workers face a stoppage as AFL union members hold mass meetings to decide if they will resume production at Powell River Paper Company. CIO International Woodworkers of America claims logs at the mill are hot- non union produced, while AFL denies the charge.
At the 350 mile mark of the Memorial Day 500 mile race in Indianapolis George Robson of Los Angeles led by almost two laps over Jimmy Jackson of Dearborn Michigan. Robson drove a rebuilt car once used by the late Jimmy Snyder whose time stood until Ralph Hepburn broke it last Sunday before he retired on the 21st lap.
