President Truman urged Congress to approve a vast foreign aid package totaling 8.5 billion dollars to counter Soviet expansion. The plan prioritizes military and economic assistance to about 50 allied nations, with 6.25 billion for defense and 1.6 billion for Asia and other regions, plus a request to boost Eximbank lending by one billion. He warned of dangers and stressed mutual security to curb communism.
Showtime tonight at 8 15 at Municipal Auditorium. The Black and White Scandals, sponsored by the Jaycees, begins with two performances. Tickets on sale today and tomorrow from 9 to 5 at 109 East Ninth. Box office opens each evening at 7. Prices include tax 2.40 1.80 1.20 and 0.75 for children.
San Jose State College officials reported a missing clock mechanism valued at 500 dollars from the football stadium. Athletic Director S G Hartranft prepared the scoreboard for a spring practice game when the loss occurred. The incident leaves investigators and college staff puzzling over the thief's motive.
Amarillo actress Ann Lee nears signing to star in Columbia Pictures Boots Malone with William Holden. Production starts June 1 after contract finalization within a week. Lee, with Broadway credits and her own theater company, moves from stage to film in a race track drama directed by William Dieterle.
A flock of several thousand bees swarmed a grocery store sign reading Free Parking and covered an arch over a driveway. Store manager Paul Clar contacted a state bee man who redirected the insects to another area, avoiding penalties for overparking.
A teen entered a Chicago drug store and shouted This is a stickup. He ordered the clerk to move. The 57 year old counter man Richard Robinson yelled Get the hell out of here and the youth fled.
President Truman warned at a news conference that the United States would be a battlefront and a target of destruction in any third world war. He urged policies aimed at preventing such a war and said if it comes the world could be driven back to the dark ages. He defended his program as a path to world peace and noted his wife’s reaction as she smiled when asked about 1952.
General Van Fleet warned that although the Communist offensive failed, Red forces still possess the capacity for new attacks. He cited a UN counterattack in the east central front, the 60,000 Red casualties, and the effective UN artillery and air force support that halted the assault and forced a retreat beginning May 22 23.
A hurricane edge capsized a 50 foot launch returning liberty party sailors to ships near Newport Rhode Island. Two men died, about 135 others were thrown into icy seas, and 24 were hospitalized. Rescue boats and a coast guard helicopter assisted as the Nodaway led efforts, with survivors retrieved amid rain and fog.
Allied tanks and infantry smashed across the 38th parallel in a 13 mile drive, splitting retreating Chinese forces south of the line. The operation targeted Chunchon and Choyang River crossings as units advanced, with praise for the bold move from Lt General Almond and UN commanders as the front line surged forward.
In Washington Gen Omar Bradley told senators Truman was right to dismiss Douglas MacArthur but the method could have been handled better. He gave Korea casualty totals, warned NATO lacks capability to halt Russia, and discussed Iran and Red China issues. He supported relieving MacArthur but faulted the dismissal process.
Bel Canto Chorale at Amarillo High School named Bette Hickerson and Martha Schultz as the two most valuable members. A M Autrey presented ear screws and a jewel box at the annual banquet in the American Legion Ballroom. Chyll Smith acted as toastmaster. Winds up to 35 mph are expected this afternoon, with recent rainfall amounts varying across towns including Clayton 0.37, Roswell 0.10, Pampa and Childress trace, Lubbock 0.12, Hereford 0.02, and Vega 0.02 inches.
Baseball briefs note sporadic action including the Cubs and Phillies, varied scores for Detroit and Cleveland, with Ostrowski and Berra homering for New York. Cleveland meets Washington this afternoon while St. Louis and Boston had a rain postponement. Cincinnati visits St. Louis tonight in National League play.
Four youths arrested in Adrian linked to burglaries from Amarillo to Missouri. Roy Cherry and James Beasley, both 17, of Nashville Tennessee, charged with the Dutch Mill Cafe burglary on West Sixth. Three other youths, 16, held. Robberies occurred within hours at Wildorado Vega and Amarillo cafes and Alston’s Pastry Shop. Dutch Mill Cafe cash register eight dollars and about twenty five dollars in change from the music box.
United Nations in New York received information from a Russian source via Sweden two weeks prior that the Kremlin would view a settlement along the 38th parallel as acceptable. The disclosure was made today.
Amarillo businessman Dennis W. Thorn owns Thorn Candy Company and a newly purchased church site at Fourteenth and Lincoln. He will open Fourteenth and Lincoln Church next Sunday, preaching at 11 am and 7:45 pm, with services not affiliated to any denomination. Thorn, ordained Assemblies of God minister since 1924, has pastored in Plainview Roaring Springs McCamey Canyon and later returned to evangelism. He began candy making in 1938 from his home kitchen with a $5 capital investment and now resides with his wife at 3323 West Tenth, raising four children and eight grandchildren.
