The motor minesweeper YMS 481 is lost in the Philippines due to enemy action. Casualties among the crew of about 30 are described as moderate. The loss brings total U S naval vessels lost since the war’s start to 309.
President Truman will fly to San Francisco to address the closing session of the United Nations conference. He may take a short Pacific Northwest rest trip and return to the White House by plane. He plans to witness the signing of the world security charter and speak about 15 minutes at theOpera House.

London May 24 A network of 20 pipelines under the English Channel sent more than 1,000,000 gallons of fuel oil daily to Allied armies in Europe after D Day. Terminals at Cherbourg and Boulogne linked Britain's line, with giant drums and three inch cables laying the channel crossing. Pumping at Cherbourg and Boulogne kept fuel moving to the front as the Allies advanced. The operation was code named Pluto.
