Amarillo High School Plans 1939 Commencement Evening

500 graduates of Amarillo High School will assemble at the Municipal Auditorium tomorrow at 8 pm for commencement exercises. Dr. Umphrey Lee of Southern Methodist University will deliver the address. Dorothy Howze and Jane Parris will give the salutatory and valedictory. Awards, scholarships, and the class gift will be presented, with diplomas conferred by Charles M. Rogers.

Seven Squalus Survivors Rescued In Historic Diving Bells

Seven survivors from the submarine Squalus were lifted 240 feet to the surface in the Falcon diving bell, with eight more expected and a total rescue projected to take about 16 hours. The operation marked the first use of a diving bell in U.S. Navy history as crew from the Brooklyn Navy Yard prepared an emergency hospital aboard the Brooklyn.

U S Allows Helium Exports to Poland for Stratosphere Flight

The United States will authorize Poland to obtain helium for a summer stratosphere flight. The National Munitions Control Board set a limit of 500000 cubic feet per country per year, with Poland requesting 220000 cubic feet. The secretary of state may approve or reject export applications accordingly.

Oklahoma City May 24 The body of a hitchhiker killed in a truck crash near here was identified by a sister as James Vernon Maberry 15 of Lefors He had been living with his sister Mrs E G Monday in Sulphur and had left Monday for home The truck driven by Sam Gidney 30 collided with a tree also injuring Charles George Holland 21 who lost a leg in the crash

Ford Surplus Drops First Time Since 1932

Ford Motor Company reports a $19 264 661 decline in surplus for the 1938 calendar year, reducing the total surplus to $588 821 274. The balance sheet was filed with the Massachusetts state tax commissioner.

Amarillo men back plan for aviation training school

Two Amarillo businessmen pledged financial backing to recruit either an army or Civil Aeronautics Authority training school for Amarillo. They would provide flying equipment, with officials overseeing civilian instructors, as part of the government backed plan. Carl Hinton said he will present Amarillo’s offer to army air officials in Washington.
