Sailors Beached in Amarillo on Furlough from Boise

Two U S 5 Boise sailors on furlough from Long Beach were stranded in Amarillo when their leave expired and their hitchhiking failed. After seeking aid, the Red Cross arranged transport to the recruiting office in Wichita Falls per ship command.

Dangerous Convicts Are Killed in Fight

Two long term negro convicts who escaped during the Cummins prison farm cyclone were killed in a hand to hand clash with two prison trustees in a swamp near the farm. Archie Godwin 33 from Quachita County Ark serving life for assault to kill and burglary. James Patterson 24 from Columbia County Ark serving seven years for burglary and wanted in Natchitoches Parish La on sheriff's order.

Squalus Sinks Off Portsmouth With 60 Aboard

The U S S Squalus sank in 240 feet of water off Portsmouth New Hampshire. Navy reports indicate a crew of over 60 may be aboard with divers en route from Portsmouth and eight flown from nearby to assist. Commanded by Lieut Oliver F Naquin the submarine is at 12 miles southeast of Portsmouth with rescue operations underway.

Cactus Jack Garner Driven From Hotel Room by Smoke

Vice President Garner wearing blue and white striped pajamas was led from a Washington Hotel suite by smoke from overheated air-conditioning ducts. Mrs. Garner and their son and daughter-in-law were in the suite. their rooms were unharmed. A small blaze elsewhere in the hotel was quickly extinguished.

Special Master Named In Gray-Danciger Patent Case

Robert A. Stone was appointed Special Master by Federal Judge James C. Wilson in Gray Processing Company versus Danciger Oil and Refining Company to determine profits from alleged patent infringement. The court held patents infringed and ordered access to Danciger records to assess gains from the gray process, a move seen as pivotal in petroleum refining history.

Three Men Released On Bond In Deer Killing Case

Three Canadian residents George Carver Major Johnson and Roy Crim are free on $500 bond each after being charged with federal game law violations. Wardens report four deer a fawn two does and an eight point buck were killed with .22 rifles at the Boggy Creek federal game preserve in Hemphill County. They pleaded not guilty at arraignment before the U S deputy commissioner in Amarillo.

Friendly West Virginia faces a conflict as nominating conventions clash with school graduations. Mayor Ella Eddy and her all female administration face a June 6 city election with John Fisher and John Hough as mayoral candidates. Federal Reserve Official Honored at Amarillo Luncheon

M. Szymczak, member of the board of governors, Federal Reserve System, was honored at a noon luncheon by the Amarillo Clearing House Association at the Herring Hotel. He traveled from El Paso with Jay Taylor and is a former Chicago official and professor. Amarillo bankers plan to host the Panhandle Bankers Association annual convention next Tuesday.

A 21 year old hitchhiker from near Amarillo was killed in a Yukon Oklahoma crash after a truck pickup. He had light hair and a 169 pound frame and carried a dark suitcase bearing the laundry mark M. A Berry Mayberry or Mabbary. Identifications efforts were underway.
