Rain drenches lower Panhandle counties with two inch average

The lower Panhandle counties saw about two inches of rain Monday night, soaking Childress and nearby counties. A garage roof collapsed under the weight of water, lakes rose, and cattle range is strengthened. Late wheat and oats should benefit from the wet spell.

Wife charged with murder of mill worker in Fall River

Mrs Gertrude Gibbons wife of mill worker Theodore R Gibbons was arrested in Fall River Mass on murder charges after body of her husband was found in a well in East Swansea. Also arrested Antone P Silva of Pawtucket R I in connection with the case. The couple had been estranged and Mrs Gibbons is mother of a four year old. The report notes a police inquiry at headquarters.

The forecast calls for tonight fair and cool and Wednesday fair. Temperature extremes from a year ago were 84 and 62 degrees. Today’s temperatures by hour start at 56 at 7 a.m. and rise to 74 at noon before 72 at 1 p.m.

Britain moves to sever ties with Soviet Russia

Premier Stanley Baldwin told the House of Commons that only an adverse vote this week could stop Britain from breaking diplomatic relations and the trade pact with Soviet Russia. He linked Soviet propaganda in London to global subversion, citing Arcos raids and papers naming agitators in the United States and across the empire. He said diplomatic relations are endangered by such acts.

Walking champ praises city at Lions Club

World champion walker Dan O Leary told the Lions club at the Amarillo hotel that Amarillo is the most beautifully laid out city in the United States and predicted it would be the largest Texas city in ten years. He, aged 87, passed through en route to the Pacific coast.

Pinedo's plane towed after fog near Azores

Wireless reports from Lisbon say Commander Francesco de Pinedo landed 150 miles from the Azores due to fog and his hydroplane is being towed to Horta. A later radiogram said the Santa Maria was seen in tow by the vessel Infantia Vesagres, with position given as 41.26 N, 22.28 W, though the vessel name may be garbled as Infante Sacres.

Sam Phillips kills siblings then takes his own life

In Knoxville Tennessee on May 24 Sam Phillips 27 a textile mill worker killed his younger brother Floyd 15 and sister Louise 22 with an axe at their home near railroad tracks. He then threw himself before a moving train dying instantly. Police found his decapitated body on the tracks identified by a rent receipt in his pocket. Authorities call it a double murder and suicide. they say he was likely driven mad.

Flood drives out 1500 as levee breach threatens Sugar Bowl area

Reported flooding from a Mississippi levee break near New Orleans threatens the Sugar Bowl region 160 villes north of the city. In Point Coupee parish, telephone operators guided evacuations as crevasse waters rushed in and officials warned every subscriber to flee.

McCrea Breach Flood Displaces Thousands in Atchafalaya Region

At McCrea ten miles below Old River on the east bank of the Atchafalaya, a flood breached at 0 30 a m after 2 000 workers were joined by 1 000 more. The break threatened parts of five parishes with 4 009 people and 1 142 000 acres of cane land. 1 500 evacuated. No lives were lost.

Lindbergh Given Destroyer Command for Return

A U S destroyer will be placed under Capt Charles Lindbergh’s command for his U S return from Europe. Commander W W Galbraith will lead Destroyer Division 25 which is in European waters ready to offer service for Lindbergh and to bring his plane Spirit of St Louis back to the United States. The division sails around June 16 and could return Lindbergh about a week after that date. The group includes destroyers Isherwood Case Sharkey Lardner Touvey and Beck. The move followed a White House conference with President Coolidge and Acting Secretary Robinson.
