In 1928 the Republicans ride a dry line with Calvin Coolidge while the Democrats appear wet. New York hosts a September convention as Dr. Butler may seek governorship. The piece blends political satire with science notes and local booster chatter about Oakland radio publicity.
The New York World accuses Borger of revived wild west conditions with nightly shootings and gunmen. In Harlem a fireman Leaped from a three story ladder to rescue a mother and two children trapped by flames. Fireman Reviello grabbed the woman’s child from the window, then dropped back to the ladder and died, while Fireman Reilly brought the mother and child to safety as smoke filled the room. The baby remained inside as the rescue unfolded.
Samuel Joseph Brown aged 75 died at Northwest Texas hospital after returning from Florida in failing health. Born in Virginia, he lived in Amarillo since 1892 and served in Mosby Rangers during the Civil War. Survived by three daughters and two sons, services set for the Masonic Temple with Knights Templar rites at Liano cemetery. Burial under Blackburn Funeral home. The body lies at his daughter’s home until noon tomorrow. Mrs. Jon Killough recovering from tonsil operation.
In Kansas City at Richards Field two aviators debated tossing a stray dog from a plane. The ill conceived stunt allegedly involved Waldo Robey, a pilot at E E Rowtefield Jr’s flying school, who was discharged after the incident. Neither city cruelty laws nor state statutes clearly apply to dogs.
Eighteen people die in four aviation accidents and three major grade crossing wrecks. A New York New Haven and Hartford train derailed near Mansfield Massachusetts injuring several. Notable incidents include a trapeze act in Chariton Iowa where a spectator was killed and a flyer seriously injured.
Estimates by the Commerce Department show Amarillo's population at 41,000, up from 15,594 in 1920 after annexations. Amarillo forecast shows partly cloudy skies tonight and Tuesday with probable showers. Temperatures today reach 84 with a low around 64 and highs around 88 tomorrow.
