A 250000 railroad engineers and trainmen warned of a strike but the hour passed with no walkout as government imposed controls on non rail transport to ensure food and mail deliveries. Train crews at New York Grand Central Terminal left posts at 4 PM Standard Time as the deadline neared.
The national railroad strike arrived with no word of postponement. Washington warned to pool equipment and dovetail schedules for maximum movement as a 4 P. M. deadline passed. President Truman met with union chiefs and railroad leaders seeking a compromise, but prospects of averting the walkout dimmed.

An Army board prepared to publish its report on the Zebulon Vance voyage where 20 babies fell ill and 22 babies and two mothers were stricken with likely summer diarrhea. Parents described deplorable conditions aboard the Vance with crowded cabins and a drunken nurse reportedly among the staff.
Republicans tout a Pennsylvania 23rd District victory by Carl H. Hoffman over Marian B. Snyder as evidence of a GOP trend toward a Republican Congress in November. Democrats dispute the meaning, calling it a local race and noting the district’s history.

John Grabowski aged 46, catcher for the New York Yankees 1927 world champions, died in St. Peter's hospital after sustaining burns when a fire razed his Guiledriland home last Sunday.
National BPW president Miss Margaret Hickey arrives from St. Louis to preside at the Texas BPW convention at the Herring Hotel. Registration opens at 4 PM, with an informal reception on the mezzanine and a presidents dinner Saturday in the Crystal Ballroom.
Four year old Maurice Miller fell into a six foot hole while watching skywriter Gus Ficken of Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. neighbor Vila Underwood rescued him. He was uninjured but his clothes were a mess. His father Delmer Miller operates Plains Flying Service.
