At 1 45 PM an alarm summoned Central Fire Station to 112 West Fourth. Firemen rushed out and sped to a car upholstery fire. The driver had brought the car to the station to report the blaze himself. Damage described as minor.
President Truman again asks Premier Stalin for Soviet grain to help starving nations while U S officials say export wheat goals near a record 420 million bushels from the 1945 crop. Moscow radio says Stalin plans international cooperation but notes past constraints. The formation of a 20 nation emergency food council is proposed by the United States Britain and Canada to address the crisis.
Amarillo received nearly 8000 in planning grants from the Federal Works Agency for a municipal complex including a coliseum city hall and social centers. Officials said additional federal aid may follow as construction starts while local bonds and site plans proceed.
Oak Ridge Tennessee May 22 The CIO and AFL wage a campaign to recruit 35 000 to 40 000 workers at the atomic bomb plant. Both unions set up recruiting offices inside the project and contact workers off duty. They pledge not to enter production areas while driving to unionize this key Southern workforce.
