Fire and other curios from Amarillo’s past
In 1901 Amarillo faced one of its worst fires destroying seventeen buildings and a quarter of the business district. The May 23 1901 Evening News recounted the blaze and also carried ads for land sales 60 000 acres at 1.75 per acre origination and payment terms. The issue noted the newspaper had just gained telephone service and included assorted local notices and ads for Scotch Oats suits and a recipe.
