Premier Mussolini declared Italy would brook no interference and would march direct as he refused the council's compromise plan. He rejected part five of the 1928 Italo Abyssinia agreement and warned of no turning back, risking renewed tensions in Southeastern Europe.
Marvin Branson 36 of Salina Kan faces murder charges after Raymond Dority 37 was slain near the Tri-State Fair grounds Panhandle Amarillo investigation by Potter County grand jury. Dority died from a severed jugular after a quarrel that began when Dority called Branson a drunkard and Branson a dopehead. Dority’s funeral plans were unsettled. Branson has not yet spoken beyond admitting a fight. Witnesses Mrs Juanita Luster and Red Goddard testified to the grand jury about the night’s events.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously approved a joint resolution for a 5 million dollar appropriation for the 1936 Texas centennial celebration. In executive session they set the vice president as the fourth member of the federal commission overseeing the project with Hull Wallace and Roper as other members. The bill limits assistant commissioners to three and the funds to be available for six months after the expo ends.
In Los Angeles a group of 200 veterans organized in a vacant lot to plan a march on Washington. Leader Royal Robertson urged recruiting to reach 2,000 and begin the trek by tomorrow night. Washington meanwhile sees renewed bonus advocacy aimed at bypassing the Patman bill veto, with several proposals pending in Congress.
Senate munitions investigators abandon efforts to block a 460 million naval appropriation bill. It would add 24 ships toward a treaty navy by 1942, 11 000 enlisted men, and 555 new airplanes. House already passed it amid strong support. If Senate approves, a conference with the House will follow.
The Brazos crest moved toward the gulf flooding coastal lands while upstream lowlands receded. Colorado River floodwaters filled Matagorda streets as the river peaked there in over two decades. Trinity widened near Liberty as overflow threatened a fringe of shacks. New York May 24 A Dun & Bradstreet weekly review notes a modest upturn in trade with more upside variance than a clear trend. Industrial activity recovered slightly from the prior week though retail and wholesale distribution remained hampered by bad weather. Prices lifted sentiment but political events temper plans for a sustained rise. Retail trade held at a higher level than last week despite cool weather slowing summer movement.
Skies remain overcast with cooler temperatures and a forecast of moisture through the weekend. Tomorrow should be partly cloudy and warmer with possible showers tonight and Saturday. A light mist dampened streets earlier, as Panhandle conditions mirrored the trend and temperatures rose from 45 to 52 degrees by noon.
The Amarillo College board of trustees will meet tonight at 8 in the high school auditorium to consider a new home strategy. Options include buying the Masonic Temple or using Sam Houston Junior High, with possible expansion adding laboratories and absorbing Bivins and other nearby classes. The meeting is open to all patrons.
