The House voted 228 to 169 to block the Hull O Connor measure and shift the 3 cent per pint tax on 2.75 percent beer from Ways and Means to a full roll call. It was the first beer record vote since 1919 after a 20 minute debate as the Senate had recently rejected similar legalization proposals.
In a Gray County racketeering case defense witnesses including business leaders, a church deacon and farmers testified denying knowledge of wrong doing by former Sheriff Graves and six deputies. Judge James Wilson criticized government counsel for perceived perjury, calling for arrest of a key witness and noting the case remains on appeal.
Dual shooting at the Coronado Hotel leaves Velma Spain 18 and James Riddle 44 dead. Coroner calls it murder and death by own action. Services set at Griggs Chapel in Chico with interment at Llano Cemetery.

SHAMROCK May 23 Delegates from Missouri Oklahoma New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle gathered for the U S Highway 66 Association annual convention. Charles Tompkins of El Reno reported the road is paved except for short gaps between Amarillo and Chicago with gaps to be filled. Oklahoma has 135 miles and the Panhandle 60 miles paved since the last convention. The event opened with a golf tournament for visitors and today’s entertainment follows.
Voters flood Capitol mailboxes with protests over congressional payroll abuses revealed by Raymond Clapper. Dispatches show relatives of lawmakers earning up to 4000 dollars yearly for work not done, prompting calls for public payroll lists and further investigations.
A Shanghai dispatch reports General Shirakawa, commander of Japanese forces in Shanghai, died of wounds from the recent bombing of Japanese officials there. The report notes the casualty occurred as clashes followed the attack.

Gov A Harry Moore confirmed reports that three weeks earlier Al Capone aides offered help in locating the baby if Capone received full credit.
Amid commencement week 400 Amarillo students complete studies across four institutions. Amarillo High School seniors hear Rev C Snodgrass on Growing Up at Municipal Auditorium. Bishop Seaman addresses Amarillo College sophomores on the Majesty of God. Monsignor Amirault sermons at Sacred Heart Cathedral as St. Mary's Academy and Price Memorial hold graduation and alumni initiation. Rotarian luncheon precedes Friday graduation at Price Memorial College.
Herschel Gray 33 of San Antonio was charged with the murder of J. A. Mangum 45 a known big time gambler. Mangum was shot to death last night while driving his car along a downtown Houston street after a quarrel over gambling winnings. Gray was intoxicated when arrested and made no statement.
Miss Norma Ramsey, 25, was killed and her sister Miss Nena Kate Ramsey injured when their car was hit at a grade crossing by Texas & Pacific No. 16 The Texan in Abilene Texas. The sisters were connected to Simmons University with their father Dr. H. H. Ramsey a pioneer dentist.
N S Goen of El Paso was named temporary chairman as the Republican State Presidential convention opens in Mineral Wells. The state executive committee selected Goen unanimously after a pre-convention meeting to organize the convention, draft the delegate roll and resolve contests. E C Toothman of Dallas was named temporary secretary with Charley Beck of Hillsboro as sergeant at arms and J P Blankenbecker of Cisco as assistant sergeant at arms.
Postmaster W. C. Kenyon departed Amarillo Sunday night for Mineral Wells to attend the state Republican convention. Early arrivals included Hugh E. Exum of Amarillo among the attendees.
The Texas law regulating size and weight limits for commercial motor vehicle loads on highways was upheld by the Supreme Court. Lord Inchcape, renowned shipping magnate, died at sea aboard his yacht near Monte Carlo.

Mrs Wilda C Myers wife of County Attorney Rhea C Myers died Sunday after childbirth at a local hospital with the infant also passing. Funeral services are planned for 3 pm Tuesday at Memorial Park Cemetery after 2 pm last rites at San Jacinto Methodist Church with Rev Gaston Foote officiating. Pallbearers include Homer Callaway W W Finch W T Williford Lon D Marre Sam Norton Marvin J Paul. Survivors include husband Rhea C Myers Jr 6 and mother Mrs Anna Hustad of Madison Wis along with three sisters and two brothers. Bodies to lie in state at Boxwell Brothers Chapel until services. A bone-dry Potter County delegation sails to Houston for the state Democratic convention. County chairman Grover B. Hill says the group will oppose a wet plank and any second choice for President, backing John W. Garner first. Hill and other locals left Saturday night for Houston with Amarillo attendees James Galerie, Mrs. Lloyd Fletcher, and Mrs. Floyd A. Cooper.
Atty Gartman, convicted in Navarro County for transporting liquor and sentenced to one year, appealed the conviction to the court's criminal appeals today.
