The first twelve jurors for William N. Shepherd's murder trial of his wife's millionaire ward are set. Police ties to James Callan and grand jury activity stretch to Florida as defense investigators press claims of tampering and witness coaching.
Harbor police and customs boarded the steamer Van Jonesport from Maine to Boston and seized 1054 cases of assorted liquors valued at 59000. Seven crew members were arrested as police say the liquor was bound for clubs in the Back Bay area.
A May 21 wind storm tore through northeastern Colorado killing three people and injuring several others. A carpenter in Boulder died when a roof blew onto rock, two other workers were injured, a man drowned when a boat capsized at Berthoud, and a 77 year old girl died in Platteville as an out building collapsed. Debris stretched seventy five miles across the region as damage tallies rose.
Saturday bargain day at The Globe want ad counter offers a premium aluminum or enamel pan for cash ads. Each cash ad earns one premium, with next Saturday featuring a prefabricated pan. Advertisers are urged to place ads for house sales car sales or lost pocket books to get results.
The shadow of the Confederacy returned to Dallas as veterans in uniforms and banners led a three hour parade. Thousands cheered as flowers flew, bands played, and riders on bicycles and automobiles joined veterans from many wars, including a World War section.
Mayor Bivins released a resolution backing the railroad engineers report on the water problem. The engineers recommend rejecting Kiersted and Wordwanch plans and sourcing water from wells north of Word property. Associated Press reports customs agents seized over $156,000 worth of people and whisky on the steamship Boston of the Western Steamship Company and the freighter Winters. Officials said it was the biggest seizure from foreign vessels to date.
Three Philippine scouts who disappeared over two weeks ago were found murdered in the mountains near Camb Stotsenhberr. Wounds indicate bolo knife use by outlaws.
The Western Packing company began operations at the Panhandle Packing house after $60,000 in remodeling. The first cattle from I. B. Hendricks of San Jon New Mexico weighed over 744 pounds. Hog prices were set at 50 cents under Wichita rates, with growers noting strong marketing terms and shrinkage considerations.
Mellroy's market has purchased the first sixteen heaves killed by Western Packing and will sell them Monday morning. M. M. Merriman announced the deal and said his company will cooperate with Western Packing. The beef comes from the Fendick herd, long yearlings deemed to be excellent beef by packing plant judges.
A N Olver urged Amarillo to rely on city commissioners for water rights and sewers while cautioning against over boosting. He urged tree planting, park land purchase, and wider city development. H H Sehenier outlined New York playground plans and visitors toured the Western Packing plant during open house week.
A cordon of peace officers including star rangers and National Guardsmen held the Dallas County jail area as a second mob threat faded. Five men wounded in a fruitless rush near the jail portage, while no new confessions emerged. Arrests include T. S. Smith on inciting riot. the mob, once about 900, dwindled under guard ahead of next Thursday's murder trial of Adkins and Milstead.
