Former President Hoover proposed at a UN emergency session that the United Nations set up a world food administrator to direct global distribution to hungry nations. He had just returned from a worldwide survey of food conditions.
President Truman delays decisions on coal and railroad disputes. A 4 PM Thursday deadline looms for a settlement with coal miners amid widespread production losses in Pennsylvania. Sen. George urges continuous Congress sessions to craft labor laws addressing the ongoing strikes and unbalanced labor legislation.
British dispatches quote Iran's War Ministry denying fighting in Azerbaijan and Kurdistan. A government spokesman told BBC that it was unlikely fighting was occurring and that forces had strict orders not to start conflicts. Some frontier units might have fired in provocation. Teheran radio made no mention of such fighting.
Three Egyptian policemen faced a perilous situation but were rescued with help from two Egyptian colleagues of special police. The report notes British assistance during the operation.

City mail delivery will be extended to Pleasant Valley residents beginning June 1. Postmaster W D DeGrassi said today the Pleasant Valley route will be a mounted route similar to service now extended to the Humphreys Highland addition and other outlying sections. One delivery per day will be made.
Senate and House naval leaders warn the Truman administration against merging the Army and Navy. In a joint letter Walsh and Vinson urge Secretary Forrestal to reject compromise, citing defects and fear of widening the breach between services and disorganizing national defense.
W M Fowlkes of 313 East Eighteenth won first prize in a News Tip contest for a tale that his dog returned home two weeks after being reportedly killed by chloroform and cremated. Second prize goes to W R Spencer of 604 Madison for a tip about his father caught in a runaway horse rope. Third prize to Louie Hudson of 808 Belleview for a tip about a rattlesnake bite to Gene Chapman’s horse at Vega.
The Globe and News will publish eight pages daily due to a CIO loggers and paper mill workers strike in British Columbia. Powell River Paper Co. shutdown reduces output for major Texas dailies. Negotiations on wages and hours begin in Vancouver between unions and BC manufacturers.
Pontiac, Michigan reports that James Royce Shannon a prolific songwriter known for Missouri Waltz and When Day Is Done died after stepping in front of a freight train. The actor composer who used the name James Royce reportedly ended his life.
City trash department workers appeal for public compliance with a 12 point ordinance to improve collection. They urge proper containers, lids, drainage, wrapping, and separation of yard and building waste while warning of injuries and fire risks from improper disposal.
County commissioners and city planning leaders convened at 2 30 PM to review Coliseum designs with architect William C Townes. The court pressed for immediate designation of an architect for auxiliary buildings and grounds layout. Committee members W M Gouldy Rex Baxter Harvey Allen and S B Whittenburg attended the court session along with real estate and insurance firm reps.
Partly cloudy conditions persist in Amarillo and vicinity with little temperature change. Tonight and Tuesday remain partly cloudy with cooler air tonight and a warmer Tuesday. West Texas shows similar trends with warmer Tuesday in the Panhandle and South Plains, while New Mexico has scattered showers in the northern mountains and a warmer northeast Tuesday. Highs around 71, lows near 43, noon at 52.
Belgium officials announced that eighty eight traitors condemned for Nazi collaboration have been executed since liberation. The statement marked a harsh postwar tally and reflected the ongoing purge within the country.
In Wiesbaden on May 20 the United States forces disclosed a major air bombardment against submarine pens near Bremen. Four engine B-29s joined B-17s and British Lancasters in flights between Bremen and Marham England to test earth shock bombs. The aim is to measure the effect of massive targets destruction using 22 000 pound British bombs and 4500 pound American rocket assisted armor piercing bombs.
President Truman told a William Jewell College audience that Americans must work for world peace and for the strength of the U S. He said workers are essential in farms, mines, railroads, auto plants and mills and urged graduates to get on the team for peace and leadership. He spoke after receiving an honorary law degree.
Berlin reports that a year after his downfall Adolf Hitler is increasingly revered as a Teutonic legend. Many Germans defend his motives and forgive excesses, viewing him as a betrayed idealist while some hold he may still be alive or return.
In Alexandria on May 19 a British truck collided with a streetcar, provoking an Egyptian crowd to stone two British soldiers and a military policeman. Four people were injured in the incident.
