They dined as guests of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce with Mayor Ross Rogers welcoming them. Kwanzo Tanaka of Mitsubishi Tokyo urged prosperity for both nations. Walter Barlow presided as chamber president.
Texas Attorney General William McCraw arranged a conference with Chief Justice Hughes for this afternoon to discuss appointing a special master to hear testimony in the interstate fight over taxing the $57,000,000 estate of the late Col. BE R Green. Claims of Texas New York Florida and Massachusetts allege the magnate resided within their tax zones.
Lavel Stevens 23, one of four escapees from Longview, was recaptured in Fort Worth after a high speed chase. He had been driving the car of a Dallas man he befriended as officers Hawkins and Barbee intercepted on a highway toward Dallas following a 75 mph pursuit through the city.
The Texas Federation of Labor at its annual convention approved Roosevelt's court packing plan and telegraphed Texas Congress members urging support. The action came as the convention concluded in Tyler on May 20.

Paris reports France approved a British plan to withdraw all foreign volunteers from the Spanish civil war under a truce. Britain would consult Russia, Germany, Portugal and Italy. Italy’s stance was uncertain though Mussolini feared the war’s danger. A joint démarche to both sides could follow if responses are favorable.
In Austin on May 20, opposition blocked early confirmation of Gov. Allred appointees. A motion to enter executive session was met with objections by Sen. Weaver Moore. Two appointments were delayed. Tom Deberry of Bogota would join the state board of control on Jan. 1, 1938 and Otto Studer of Pampa would join the state industrial accident board on Sept. 1, 1937.
Potter County Young Democrats will meet at 7 45 tonight in the Herring Hotel to discuss plans for the district convention to be held next month in Dalhart. Bob White, chairman, urges all eligible for the club to attend.
In Jackson Mississippi on May 20 police guarded Vivian Gregory from angry neighbors as she denied beating her three month old daughter to death. Sheriff J M Martin transported her from a Raleigh Smith County home to Hinds County jail where she faces a murder charge. She allegedly admitted whipping the infant to make it behave while neighbors say she did not want the child.
Three babies from a quadruplet birth near Muskogee Okla may receive their first nourishment today. Mother Mrs William Mullins, 20, gave birth with a 16 year old son at the scene. one girl died shortly after, while two boys and a girl were moved to a hospital. The father rushed for a doctor as the event unfolded.
The House tentatively approved a proposal to allocate 14,483,000 dollars for vocational education grants to states in 1938, rejecting the 7,241,500 dollar recommendation. The vote stood 147 to 91 in favor.
Extra dividend of 28 cents plus a regular quarterly 50 cents are declared by the directors of Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. Both dividends are payable June 15 to shareholders of record June 1. A regular 50 cent dividend was paid on March 15.

Narcotic discovery at a jail leads to narcotics charges for Dave Chappell after 15 grains of heroin were found hidden in a rubber mouth pouch beneath a jailer’s search. Jailer Dick Vaughn also encountered a hypodermic needle during the intake. A second man, H. A. Hight, faces charges for selling narcotics based on a government purchase. federal records show multiple prior arrests.
In Ville Platte Louisiana a jury found Melvin Vidrine 27 guilty of murdering his common law wife Frozina Zizinat without capital punishment. District Judge J C Fruge sentenced him to the rest of his natural life at hard labor.
Members John Gilvin Charles Hoover and Neill Singleton met with Mayor Rogers and city commissioners this morning to pursue real estate equalization. Protest hearings are scheduled for early June.
Rep John J. Cochrane chairman of the House committee on governmental reorganization stated after a White House conference that the plan's current phase is very much alive. The Missouri Democrat emphasized continued House consideration of the initiative.
Mary Lon Ball employed at a Midland cafe died early today when the car she rode in sideswiped a truck 12 miles west of Midland. Hal Taylor of Brownfield broke a leg. Clarence Gosch Jr of San Saba and Irene McBride of Midland were injured lightly.

Court heard testimony from Swaine Jones and his wife about a Friona bank robbery plot. Jones claimed involvement in planning and forging checks while Mrs. Jones described the planning meeting and Myrtle Vowell’s claim she would drive the getaway car. The trio divided cash and checks with Vowell receiving silver.
Mrs Vowell's sister and mother attended the trial as her family watched. Judge Wilson appointed Amarillo attorney S F Rose to defend Mrs Vowell. District Attorney Clyde O Bastus and assistant prosecutor Joe Jones handled the government's case.
