Urgent plea for NRA extension two years

Administrator Donald Richberg told the House Ways and Means Committee that about 2,000,000 wage earners could be put on relief if the NRA expires. He urged a two year extension despite Senate approval of a ten month renewal. Richberg warned of grave industry troubles if the act dies and cited census figures for employed workers under the NRA.

Lost Girl Found Dead in Dugout near Jackson Heights

Eight year old Shirley Evans missing from Jackson Heights Queens since last Friday was found deceased 250 yards from her home buried beneath earth in a cave dug by her and playmates. District Attorney Charles P Sul of Queens County said probable cause is a landslide with ongoing search for a possible kidnapper and assailant.

Oklahoma City Faces 16-Foot Wall of Water Threat

Floods retreat but 300 families near the Canadian River in Oklahoma City are ordered from lowland homes to escape a reported 16 foot wall of water. City Manager O M Mosier moved residents to a tent city as Red Cross and relief teams rush to the stricken area.

Fine horses to show fight in Panhandle saddle event

Eight events planned for a fine saddle horse show in Panhandle on May 20. Dr. George P. Grout directs arrangements and the program opens at 7 30 with Panhandle High School band. Contest includes five gaited classes, pony classes, three gaited open close jumpers, all five gaited entries and local classes with an evening dance for visitors and riders. Entries come from Amarillo Dalhart Borger Lubbock and Plainview stables.

Four Doctors Admit Guilty in Narcotics Cases

Four physicians L C Wayland W E Redford James A Green and W Houghton pleaded guilty in federal court to Harrison anti narcotic act violations. Judge James C Wilson postponed sentencing with US Attorney Clyde O Eastus noting good reputations and urging leniency. They were excused without bond pending formal sentences as 10 Narco cases loom this term.

Brooks Field Pilot Missing on Cross Country Flight

San Antonio dispatch reports Second Lieut Wendell K Holliday a Brooks Field pilot is long overdue after taking off from San Antonio for Shreveport via Muskogee Oklahoma. Private Ira B Hicks from Brooks Field accompanied him. Nine Barksdale planes and two Brooks planes searched. Holliday listed as from Indianola Iowa.

President Hears Picator Bonus Still Fear Veto

House steering committee urged Roosevelt to approve the Patman Currency Inflation Bonus Bill but the President showed no sign of changing his plan to veto. Patman and the committee argued veterans with adjusted service certificates should receive full value now, payable Jan 1 1945, without harming the economy.

Amarillo Weather Outlook with Scattered Showers

Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity shows scattered showers tonight and Tuesday with a slight warmup on Tuesday. West Texas ahead of a partly cloudy period with possible Panhandle showers, while New Mexico expects unsettled conditions and showers in the north with little temp change. Temperature extremes today range from 45 to 54 degrees.

The city plans a major cleanup in Amarillo starting Friday with 200 local relief workers assigned to the effort. Additional disposal trucks will be added and city officials expect every alley and vacant lot to be cleaned with citizen support assured.

Two Panhandle Pioneers Die in Pampa

In Pampa on May 19 two veteran Panhandle leaders died. T. D. Hobart 90, JA Ranch executive and West Texas cattleman, succumbed after a four day pneumonia attack. J. T. Crawford 90, Civil War veteran and local insurance official, died at his daughter's home from shock after a period of good health. Hobart’s funeral is set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Crawford’s rites were pending. Pallbearers and burial details listed. survivors include his widow and a son.

Supreme Court recesses without ruling on moratoriums

The Supreme Court today recessed for a week without acting on the Frazier Lemke farm mortgage moratorium law or the National Industrial Recovery Act test cases. Decisions now loom for May 27 or June 3, and the court also agreed to hear a challenge to the Bankhead Cotton Control Act in a suit by Lee Moor of Texas against the Texas and New Orleans Railroad Company.
