City highway committee in Amarillo conducts a two day canvass raising 169.50 in registrations as part of a drive to fund two upcoming national highway conventions. Fees are 1.50 per convention with a 600 target to accommodate delegates from U. S. 60 and U. S. 66 corridors. reservations via phone 23211 or by mail to N. B. Griggs.
In San Antonio on May 19 a Louisiana brewed beverage with 2.2 alcohol content sells for 35 cents a bottle in many restaurants. County officers say they will not interfere. County Attorney D F Davis will accept complaints if made, but the District Attorney will not prosecute. Sheriff and police will not hinder sales due to lack of prosecutorial action. The beverage has been on sale in the area.
Beasley of Amarillo voices protest for regional grain interests over proposed rates affecting grain and grain products. He cites ethics of Texas Grain Dealers Association and recalls past embargo limits. Fort Worth and Austin hearings cited. Miller and Sparrow assist, Fort Worth interests pledged support, with opening remarks by Mayor Rogers and Vernon official. Program includes golf, tea, banquet, and dance, continuing Saturday morning.
Representative Marland introduced a broad oil regulation measure to prevent physical and economic waste by limiting production beyond demand. The bill would restrict imports without Interior Department certificates and directs the secretary to cap imports when U.S. crude output suffices for consumption and exports.
Harry Murch, identified as a boy gang leader, received a sentence of twenty years to life for the murder of 12 year old William Bender. The youth was bound gagged and stabbed before being left in an abandoned house in New York.
In Quincy Massachusetts on May 19 a finder publicized excerpts from a lost pocket notebook. I tems include payments for a stenographer and wife, meals, theater, and a fur coat purchased for the wife, with dates from April 3 to April 26.
Federal court heard testimony on a $3 000 000 ledger error in stock sale schemes tied to Mrs Charles E Mitchell. Prosecutors say fake security sales hid a $4 000 000 income in 1929 and 1930 involving Edward Barrett and the National City Bank.
New York police disclosed a three way split of a 206000 Ridley will bequest as two accountants and the secretary Weinstein face charges of conspiring to rob the elderly millionaire. Hoffmann said Weinstein would receive a fourth of the take for witnessing the document and dictating provisions.
Geneva May 19 The German delegate Rudolph Nadolny said Germany accepts the British disarmament plan urged by President Roosevelt as the world arms conference moves toward a possible peace or war decision. Conference leaders warned amendments threaten deadlock while Soviet will send envoy to London to join the economic conference and Moscow may announce formal acceptance soon. Paris reports France favors a strong army as military posture remains key.
Mrs Earl G Wyatt of Amarillo led a breakfast for the annual American Association of University Women convention honoring Dr Kathryn McHale and Miss Grace Wilkie. Texas delegates rode in with Mrs Wyatt and fellow Texans from Fort Worth San Antonio Pampa and Denton among others. The Silver Grill is noted for Sunday dinners as the scene for the event.
The city commission set a fair value as of January 1 1933 for tax purposes. New equalization board members Tom Cotten Homer Wheeler and Chester Adams met with the commission city manager H R Smith and assessor-collector Perry Burks. The board will begin actual work Monday.
At the Texas capitol Adjutant General Henry Kutchings said state action hinges on governor policy regarding Rangers. Governor’s office declined comment. Former Gov James E Ferguson, now adviser, warned that Rangers could be hurt if they tried to stop 3.2 beer sales as locals in El Paso planned to permit them. Attorney General James V. Allred was out of the city, leaving legal rulings unavailable.
District Attorney Walter Tynan argues that federal and Democratic support for 3.2 beer and repeal of Prohibition makes it ill advised to push beer sales bans in San Antonio. He notes Bexar County grand juries resist liquor indictments and would not approve new cases.
James W. Bass, U S internal revenue collector in Austin, applies to Washington for 500 additional beer retail permits after a rush of mail and a demand for permits valid through June 30 1933. Retail permits cost 3.34 with name and address. wholesale 8.32. Renewal demands rise to 20 for retail and 50 for wholesale to extend to June 30 1934. In Amarillo on Thursday night A. O. Walker fired a shotgun at a man peeping into his window on Kentucky Street. A second man sought medical care for shotgun wounds claiming he was shot while walking past a vacant lot. Police expect more reports of Jack the Peeper as similar incidents rise.
