Juror Recovers to Allow Continuation of Johnson Trial

The Ewald Johnson murder case proceeded after juror T. E. Anderson recovered from illness, allowing the jury to proceed with final arguments in the Texas Thornton murder case. Special Prosecutor George McCarthy urged the jury to consider the death penalty if Johnson is found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Reds Slash German Debt

London reports Russia reduced the Eastern Germany reparations bill by more than three billion dollars. Moscow said 3.658 billion had been paid by 1950, leaving 3.171 billion to be paid over 15 years. Western officials called it propaganda and noted current production payments differ from Allied zones.

Red Dean Johnson Egged in Canada during tour

In Hamilton Ontario on May 16 a crowd greeted Britain's Red Dean of Canterbury Hewlett Johnson with eggs and tomatoes as he concluded a speech. He was pelted while leaving for another hall where Rev. Dr. James Endicott of the Canadian Peace Congress spoke.

Rail strike ends after settlement on diesel fireman issue

The Pennsylvania New York Central Southern Railway and Santa Fe systems settled a long dispute with the Brotherhood of Railroad Firemen and Oilers over hiring a second fireman on large Diesel locomotives. Union leader David Robertson called the settlement satisfactory while noting some allowances will go to arbitration. The walkout, involving about 18,000 firemen, halted much of US rail movement and idled about 200,000 workers.

Santa Fe Railway Ends Amarillo Strike Returns to Service

The Santa Fe railway ends its first picket strike since 1922 in Amarillo as embargoes are lifted and Grand Canyon trains resume. Over 300 machine shop workers and transportation clerks are recalled, with 36 hours needed to clear Amarillo yards of excess cars. Freight and some passenger service continued during the stoppage.

Owen Charged in McCune Death at Preliminary Hearing

Formal charges of murder were leveled against L. C. Owen a 59 year old former Amarillo carpenter at a Cimarron County judge I E Hill hearing. Owen is charged with the fatal May 5 shooting of Lyle McCune 38 at the W L Chenault Jr Ranch south of Boise City and Dalhart.

Owen Bound Over as Case Moves to District Court

Boise City court heard details in the Chenault ranch shooting as Owen was bound over to district court. Sheriff Kenneth Warner testified about the morning of May 5 and the discovery of three pistols two .38 calibers and one .45 caliber single action weapon, with the .38 and the .45 fired.
